Skagway

Noticed our ship is in port until 11pm. Will the stores stay open later? Any suggestions on what to do in the evening in Skagway. Renting a car may be a good use of time. ( We used green jeep/diy tours before but waiting to see if they allow later returns than 6 pm.) We are in decided whether to do a Skagway road trip of wait until Anchorage or Homer.

If ships are in port and it’s still daylight most shops will be open.  Skagway is a good port to rent a car for a drive up the South Klondike Highway.  Anchorage is also a great place to rent a car to drive to several locations (Turnagain Arm for instance).   Skagway is a great place to hike.  The visitor’s center will have a hiking map designating hikes from easy to strenuous...a good way to fill an evening.

Agreed...especially about the hiking.

I'm always on here touting the virtues of hiking in Skagway.

Some pics of the hike to Upper Dewey Lake:  https://www.melindabrasher.com/2014/09/skagway-alaska-upper-dewey-lake.html

It's strenuous and takes a fair amount of time, but if you hit blue skies that day, it'll may be one of the most spectacular hikes you've ever been on.  If you just want a little stroll, Yakutania Point/Smuggler's Cove is very nice.  Or more moderate:  Lower Dewey Lake.

I highly recommend a car rental if you can get one and you have extra time.   It should be light out quite long.  The drive up over the pass to Caracross is one of the best in the state!   There are lots of tarns and fantastic lake views.    When are you cruising?  In august you can find wild blueberries.  Caracross town is also worth a stop.  There's lots of artisans near the train station and visitor's center.  Don't miss a chance to drive a few miles north of town to visit the world's smallest desert!  So beautiful and the sand is amazing!  You can see some pictures here...  https://thehotflashpacker.com/driving-from-whitehorse-to-skagway-worlds-smallest-desert/
