Travel insurance through Chase

Just received my Chase Blue Reserve card.

has anyone used the travel ins or medical benefits?
Seemed an easy choice after I purchased GeoBlueTrekker for more than the

yearly cost of the card

I have used the trip cancellation benefit from my Chase Sapphire Preferred card.

If you read the fine print, it says it will not cover pre-exiting conditions. That is what I decided not to get their card.

I have a Chase Sapphire Preferred card. I suppose I  need to purchase additional medical insurance. I'm suspicious when I see these low rates on insuremytrip.com just for medical/evacuation.  My TA suggested Allianz for way more money. Any thoughts on the supplemental insurance?

Your TA wants you to by their insurance so they can receive a higher commission.

You can receive full medical & evac for much less money.

Why are you suspicious of policies sold by insuremytrip or TripInsuranceStore?

insurance is already a suckers bet, why would you pay twice as much.

I’m just guessing, but the medical/evacuation policies you are considering may be less expensive because they  are covering fewer risks than a comprehensive policy - no coverage for cancellation, trip delay, lost baggage, etc. If the coverage is secondary, then your primary pays first so that also limits their exposure.  
 

Indeed medical expenses can be quite expensive and are probably the main reason to insure; however, even if they do have to pay big claims from time to time, you can bet those insurance companies have calculated their risks and expenses so that they are not losing money. It is a business.

 

If you are comfortable with the travel benefits you get from your credit card, a separate policy for medical/evacuation is a reasonable choice. As with any insurance, just be sure to read and understand the policy.
