Instant Messaging using IPhone while onboard

Last April on the RCL Anthem, I bought the RCL texting app for my family but I quickly noticed that I didn't need it at all, as the regular instant messaging worked using our iphones. Does anyone know if the same goes on NCL ships?

An undocumented known loophole that used to work, sometimes, depending on configuration over ship's WiFi, has been blocked & shut down - no longer working, per recent feedback & comments seen/posted here.

For inTRAship messaging via the "Cruise Norwegian" App, each registered device activated is an option, for a $10 charge good for the duration of each sailing.

Yeah..  I discovered that loophole on Anthem almost right away after boarding, entirely by accident.  It's been closed as that ship has had an IT upgrade and moved to the new app (which I don't think even has messaging turned on yet!).

As for NCL - no such loophole exists as noted by others.  I found the NCL messaging to work well on the Bliss, except for the one day the app went down.
