Edinburgh Shuttle

In Edinburgh there is normally a bus shuttle running from the dock side to the city centre.  Run on behalf of HAL by the city bus company Lothian Buses.  (Last time we met friends off a HAL ship it was payment on the quayside.  There will also be taxis available.  Journey to city centre is about 9 miles.

If you like a challenge you could walk up a steep hill to train station and get a train into the city centre.  When you see the height of the rail bridge you will get an idea how much the climb would be.

Our home city so please enjoy your visit.

Last time I took the pay shuttle to town one way and took the train for the return.  it is a lot easier going downhill.  Yes it is a huff and a puff climbing up, but a stroll going down.

Nieuw Statendam is currently tendering from Newhaven Harbour, not South Queensferry where Holland America ships have traditionally anchored in the Firth of Forth.   You will only be 4 miles from the city centre.   You would be better checking with HAL whether they are running a free / chargeable shuttle bus, but if not, there are very frequent local buses into the centre of Edinburgh or the Royal Mile from Newhaven Harbour, which cost £4.50 for a day ticket (which allows you access to all the public buses plus the tram network in the city centre).   Taxis will also be available at the harbour where your tender arrives, the cost of which is around £15 per taxi seating up to six people.

The hop on / hop off tour bus (Majestic Tour) also runs from harbour, taking in the Royal Yacht Britannia, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Royal Mile (for the Castle), Princes Street (shopping) and the Botanic Gardens.  The cost of this is £16 per person.  Card payment can be used for both the buses and our taxis.

My colleagues and I (local volunteer guides) will be on the quayside to greet your tender when you arrive.   We will be happy to help you make the most of your day in Edinburgh.

Thanks for your input.  I would go with your advice as you are in the trade.  Newhaven is so much easier than South Queensferry and the Royal Yacht Britannia is a great visit.  What is the date of the visit ?
