How are the Slots?

The rumor is that the slots are "loser" the first day of the cruise to get one hooked for the rest of the cruise.

Highly unlikely since it would mean that each machine would have to be manually altered to replace one computer chip with another or manually altered to reprogram the installed chip. You are right, however, in that the "rumor" persists.

The machines are networked.

A range of percentages are preprogrammed into the game software and selected by configuring the machine remotely.)

On our recent Glory cruise the machines were pretty cold...

We generally spend a short time in the casino every night..DH at the tables while I go to the slots...by the second night..he was holding his own at the tables while I was going through my 'slot budget' in ten minutes or less..

I switched to the nickel machines and had a blast! I didn't win much but at least I could play longer! There are quite a few nickel machines on the Glory..never really had to search real hard or wait for one.

We have been on 8 cruises since 1994, with 9 and 10 coming up this year. I like to play quarter and dollar poker and I have had 4 royal flushes, three $1,000 each and one $500 (on dollar machine and didn't have it loaded). Also won a $300 jackpot on a nickel slot and lots of little wins. The wins have come mostly at the middle and end of the cruises. Lots of really tight machines in between, though:( DH and I also play blackjack, but I get too frustrated with the players who screw up the table because they don't know the game and play stupidly. I'll play Caribbean Stud Poker then, even though it's considered a bad bet, because it's only between me and the dealer's hands and not the other players. DH plays Craps and he usually does pretty well. Overall, I would say the slots are pretty tight and if you only play a little bit, your chances at a big win are probably slim. We go to the casino every night and play for hours, so chances of hitting something may be better.

I can vouch for the slots taking a loss on the first night. We witnessed a person win $15,000 on the slots the first night and within a few hours of the casino opening. Word got out FAST, and the casino traffic picked up quickly. We heard of no one else winning anything worth talking about the rest of the cruise. They do know how to pack the room though! You can go through a roll of quarters in less than 10 minutes. Saw this happen repeatedly.

Wikipedia says

"Exception 2: In many markets where central monitoring and control systems are used to link machines for auditing and security purposes, usually in wide area networks of multiple venues and thousands of machines, player return must usually be changed from a central computer rather than at each individual machine. A range of percentages are preprogrammed into the game software and selected by configuring the machine remotely.) "

This is NOT accurate. Cruise ships, at least Carnival, have the standard fare of slots from the major manufacturers, IGT, WMS, etc. These machines require either an eprom (chip) swap or a "key" chip inserted in order to change the payback percentage. These machines cannot be changed from a central computer. Changing the payback percentage on all these machines would be a significant task and quite frankly unnecessary.

I could drone on about this stuff, and I usually do, but I'll leave it at the cruise ships have their machines set to theoretically hold a relatively large percentage of money bet and don't change them. My best guess is most of them hold in the low to high eighty percents.

We live in Nevada, and I can tell you - the Ship Poker machines have a lower pay chart than typical Nevada casinos. Where a Full House might pay 7 or 8 coins, the Ships pays 5. So, even if the house %'s are the same as land casinos, the pay-off scales are lower.

Please read the entire article you cite. You will find that you are citing the exception to a rule. The article clearly states that machines cannot be altered by a simple remote program but by the physical removal or allteration of the chip.

Not questioning if they do change the payout percentage (personally I don't care about that), but,

Don't they have "Player's Cards" to put in the machines? Wouldn't those machines have to be connected to some central computer to keep track of how much money is spent by the player?
