After 4 of us went on a snorkeling excursion in Hawaii, two other members of our party (who did something else) told us about a man local to our area who had went missing the year before while snorkeling in the EXACT area we went.  He was with his son and his body was never found.  They were assuming a shark got him.   We were like "something you could have told us BEFORE we went", but they didn't remember until we were talking about it and they went back and checked the info.
