Typically, a crossing will have three Gala / formal nights, with two of them “theme” nights. Themes include “Royal Ascot” (fancy hats), Masquerade, Black and White, and possibly others.

The voyage personalizer should list the theme nights - so folks on the Roll Call may already know what is scheduled.

I think in recent years, the two gala themes on crossings are usually "Masquerade" and "Black and White" or "Roaring 20s" and "Royal Cunard" (Red, Black & White)

...I assume they wouldn't often pair B&W with Royal Cunard.

Of the seven nights, the first and last are never formal.  Isn’t the usual pattern for the three formal and two informal nights to alternate over the remaining five days, such that formal is nights 2, 4 and 6?

The usual pattern for QM2 eastbound crossings has been as follows.

Evening 1: Smart Attire

Evening 2: Gala (Royal Cunard Ball)

Evening 3: Smart Attire

Evening 4: Gala

Evening 5: Smart Attire

Evening 6: Gala (Roaring Twenties)
Evening 7: Smart Attire

For QM2 westbound crossings, it's been a similar pattern, with the themes being Black & White Ball on evening 2 and Masquerade Ball on evening 6.

There's no guarantee that's how it will be in 2021 and there have been one or two deviations from that pattern over the past few years. But that's how it's been for almost all 7-night crossings on QM2 lately, with that specific pattern for the themed evenings in place since mid-May 2018.

Before anybody gets too worried, it'e worth remembering that the themed nights are primarily aimed at the ballroom dancers, which is perhaps only 10% of the pax. Most people just wear ordinary evening attire on Gala nights.
