Vouchers received but canceled for medical reasons

We had to cancel a trip for medical reasons. Normally our credit card company would have reimbursed us for our non refundable costs. However both Viking and the airline have issued vouchers. Does anyone know what happens if I use the vouchers and then can not travel on the rebooked trip for a covered reason? Has anyone let vouchers expire and been able to collect then? Phone lines have been busy and haven’t been able to get through to claims.

Vouchers typically are not insurable because they have no cash value even though you paid cash initially. Cancellation is not covered if you use the vouchers for a subsequent cruise.

Check the Benefits Guide of your credit card for language about expired vouchers. It depends on which card you used to pay for the cruise. I think Chase Sapphire Reserve speaks to that issue.

Pre-existing conditions may also be a factor since credit card coverage usually does not provide a waiver.

Hi dcl999,

After you submitted your trip cancellation claim to your credit card company, did they reimburse you the money you lost for your non refundable prepaid trip costs?

If you haven't yet submitted your trip cancellation claim, do that first.

We have filed a claim. We're still waiting to hear back. I did find the sentence that says we can recover our money when the credits expire . That won't be until the end of 2023 and beginning of 2024.

It makes no sense that we can't use the vouchers for another trip and receive the same benefits. The medical reason is one of those that will be resolved and not subject to future problems.

We have emailed the question and are still waiting an answer.

You should be able to use the air fare vouchers if they were issued by the air line. Viking sets its own policy for using vouchers, but it seems reasonable to expect that you could use them until they expire. Perhaps you mean that you could rebook a cruise but not  get the same promotional benefits that were offered on the cancelled cruise.
