Namvvet68 Posted January 27, 2022 #1 Share Posted January 27, 2022 We enjoy taking scenic walks while on shore and are looking for suggestions in these towns.
dfilpus Posted January 27, 2022 #2 Share Posted January 27, 2022 For Ketchikan, we planned using the Ketchikan Trail Guide at https://tomsportguides.com/uploads/5/8/5/4/58547429/ketchikantrailsguide.pdf There is every level of trail there, from the easy Married Man Trail off of Creek Street to the challenging Deer Mountain Trail. don't-use-real-name Posted January 28, 2022 #4 Share Posted January 28, 2022 At Juneau if you are at the downtown docks (Franklin Street) you can walk the street to the Alaska state capitol grounds and few blocks further to see the Governors house (but you still will not be able to see Russia from there) go a block further and down some back-alley stairs to street level returning to your ship. Alternative shore excursion trips to the Mendenhall Glacier and a walk/hike to Nugget Falls or the Mount Roberts Tram to the top of the city and walk the Alpine Loop Trail - LINK: Mount Roberts Tramway (Juneau, Alaska) - Alaskan Blue Both these are not free - - - - - Ketchikan (NCL makes this complicated docking at Ward Cove) the others are docked right downtown at one or more of the 4 piers. Walk/hike to the Creek St board walk (Dolly's house) follow it to the end of the boardwalk and a short trail to Park avenue scene of a salmon ladder and then 4 -5 block walk back to your ship (NCL excepted) Side trip off of this to the Cape Fox Lodge steep walk up Park Avenue or the Funicular to the Lodge (last check was not working Readers ?) - Map LINK: Google Maps On the way to/from the Creek Street board walk Southeast Alaska Discovery Center and the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show - plethora of shopping entertainment going coming. JUST REMEMBER if going off on your own beaten path to watch your time relative to your ships sailing time

cruise kitty Posted January 30, 2022 #6 Share Posted January 30, 2022 In Ketchikan I did the Deer Mountain trail on my own while DH fished, because the trailhead itself is about 1.5 miles from the dock area, add that to you time.... trail itself is about 2.5 miles, very easy going as long as you are used to hiking... some streams, small runoffs to traverse. In Juneau we did the hike up to the Mt. Roberts Tramway... it's the Mount Roberts Trailhead that you would be looking for... once at the top, bought a beer at the restaurant, some stuff in the giftshop, & our tickets down were deeply discounted... I think $5 each.. could have been a few bucks more). Both trails had wonderful views 🙂 We had plenty of snow on the ground when we reached the Mt. Roberts summit 🙂

CCJack Posted January 30, 2022 #8 Share Posted January 30, 2022 We also did the hike at the top of Mt. Roberts tram, we really enjoyed it. The tram itself was crowded, but once you start hiking at the top we only ran across a few groups of people. The views are spectacular. Fairly easy hiking, dirt trails, some big rocks to step over, a few places with stairs and decking for views. We had nearly 80F weather so we actually got quite warm. If cold, there is not a lot of wind protection up there so my guess is it could get cold. Have fun.....

We hiked from ship to top of tram...two very different things...
