Is Roatan safe?

I am traveling on a ladies' cruise to Roatan.  I have not been there but would like to do an excursion to see the sloths.  Is Roatan generally safe if you follow reasonable safety rules or is it best to stay in the port?  It would be a non-cruise excursion (if that makes a difference, good reviews) Thank you!

I find safety more about who one is and how they behave than it is about where you are. I have been wandering the whole of the island almost annually for 22 years, never had a whiff of trouble. This by no means suggests anyone's experience will mirror mine.

With that said, if you hire a driver with good reviews you will be fine.

If you only seek sloth, Daniel Johnson's Monkey and Sloth Hangout offers transportation.
