Night before boarding in Civitavecchia NOT in Rome

I am looking for a suggestion where to stay the night before boarding in Civitavecchia. We will be in Florence and have one night to stay someplace closer to the port, preferably by train to it and to the port. We will spend 5 nights in Rome at the beginning of our trip so would rather no go back there. If train is too much to hope for we could rent a car in Florence and drop it in Civitavecchia.

How about Pisa or Lucca?  Each is an easy train ride from Florence, then the next day it's about three hours by train from Lucca to Civitavecchia, or two hours from Pisa.

If you want something really off the beaten path, Talamone is a nice little walled town in the very southernmost part of Tuscany.  

 

The train station is about three miles from the town so you'd need to arrange with your hotel to be picked up, but it's beautiful and would make a nice one night stay.  From Talamone to Civitavecchia is one hour by train or two by bus.

Even closer to Civitavecchia is the resort area near Orbetello - Monte Argentario.  Once again, you'd need to arrange transportation from the train station to your hotel (anywhere from two to ten miles, depending on which hotel you choose) but from Orbetello to Civitavecchia the next day takes only 45 minutes or so.

Does anyone know if te PCR pre cruise is a requirment to board or just if disembarking in Israel? Have been reading other boards and some cruise lines say "not allowed to board without it". I understand that RCC is asking for a negative RAT or PCR within one day of boarding.

A vote for Lucca.  Get there in enough time to enjoy a walk on the walls. The train station is right across for the walled city.  Very convenient.

 

Very easy to get there from Florence by train, and then on to Civ.

I strongly recommend you run a search on Booking.com, Kayak.com or a similar website. And, don’t just check hotels. There are a lot of Bed & Breakfasts and apartments available. Likewise, if you have hotel rewards points, check with your chain.

Thanks for the input. We decided on Tarquinia. We just feel more comfortable closer to the port. We can take the train down the coast and visit the Etruscan Sites there and its an easy trip to the port in the morning.

It will be easy, you'll just need to arrange train station pick up and return (it's about 2 miles from the station in the valley up to the historic center), your hotel can probably help with that.

 This was pre-pandemic but my husband and I spent the night before our cruise in Civitavecchia There are a number of nice restaurants in town and free transportation from the hotel to the port.  The morning before our overnight, we caught the public bus from Civitavecchia to Tarquinia.  That bus stop is right of up the street from Tarquinia's fabulous Etruscan museum. We spent several hours there and then took another bus straight to the Etruscan ruins. We then walked back to the museum through the town, stopping on the way to get lunch, before accessing the bus back to Civitavecchia. A really nice leisurely day.
