arlsvera Posted April 29, 2022 #1 Share Posted April 29, 2022 Does the casino charge 3% to get cash (charged to my card on file)? I know that if I go to the front desk, they will charge me 3%. Is it the same in the casino? Thanks in advance .. just wondering how much cash to bring onboard!
FOPMan Posted April 29, 2022 #2 Share Posted April 29, 2022 I would expect so. Part of the basis for charging a fee is to cover the transaction cost charged by the credit card company. If a company is selling you something they price at $1.00, and there is no separate transaction fee, they are including the transaction fee in the price. In the case of a cash purchase, which is what you want to do, the value of a dollar is always a dollar. If it just gave you money dollar for dollar, the ship would lose money because it still has to pay the credit card company. (There is often some type of basic charge and then a percentage of the transaction fee that generally ranges from 2% to 6% total for any given transaction.) Brentt_M Posted April 29, 2022 #3 Share Posted April 29, 2022 Any time I have gotten cash at the casino by charging my room either at the table or at the slot I have never been assessed a fee. However, there is normally signage posted that mentions a fee, just never have seen it actually applied. I have never completed this transaction directly at the casino cage. arlsvera Posted April 29, 2022 Author #4 Share Posted April 29, 2022 Thanks -- it's not really a big deal. I haven't sailed Holland America in years. They didn't use to charge anything at the table games. I was just wondering if that was still the case!
tunafish Posted April 29, 2022 #5 Share Posted April 29, 2022 no 3% fee for tables or slots last 4-5 cruises. I experienced 3% on table games , however, more than once before
happyglobetrotter Posted April 29, 2022 #6 Share Posted April 29, 2022 Why worry about the 3% charges when you would typically lose all your money at the casino (which equals to 103%). Unless you just want to charge to your card and cash the money a short while later without playing at the casino and in order to avoid the 3% to obtain cash easily. But is it honest to pass the 3% to the cruise company. You answer.

They don't charge the fee unless they think you are trying to game the system. If you use the money for gambling - no fee - if you simply want cash - then probably. Some people would put money on there card to play slots - pull the handle once and then try and cash out.....that may get you charged the fee. Dreamer115 Posted April 30, 2022 #9 Share Posted April 30, 2022 I put cash on my account rather than using a credit card on file. Would I be charged the 3% for my own money. What I do is each month I buy a $100 gift card for myself and then I have money when I get on the ship. I generally like to get some of the cash the day before each excursion to have some to take with me.

What happens is you get a voucher in your room you take to the cage and they give you cash. You never get any actual chips this way. You can get a cash advance off your credit card this way that doesn't look like a cash advance..
arlsvera Posted April 30, 2022 Author #11 Share Posted April 30, 2022 The-Inside- Cabin ... thanks! That explains why some people get charged and some don't! I'm not looking so scam the system - I just want to know how much cash to bring!
