Pickleball on Royal Princess?

@WDCCruiser

The Royal had unhosted pickleball in May this year. It was noted in the Patter and held in the mornings around 9am-11am or so.  I didn't play this trip but last year we had so many we were stacking paddles.

Was similar in June (unhosted and frequented).  One thing I noticed is the nets are movable, so it would be possible to pull them out when the court was unused (not sure if this is allowed, but I saw folks do it a few times).

Considering Royal Princess for a cruise to Alaska, would you recommend it?

Did that in May. Had a great cruise. It was our first time on a Royal Class ship. Prefer the Grand Class but did fine on Royal. Thought Princess Live was a terrible layout on that ship. Glad to hear they are finally fixing the layout on the newest ships.

Was on Royal couple weeks ago.  They have 2 courts. Yes free, paddles & balls courtside.

We've played tennis, but have never played pickleball.  Decided to give it a try for fun.

Feels like tennis with a heavier ball, and pingpong paddles.

Unfortunately we didn't stay long, as the court next to ours had 2 couples

who thought they were pros.  We kept getting the side-eye, even though our ball

went on their side only once.

Hopefully you get a nicer group next to you, if you are new.

We think Thats what cruising is about, trying new things.

The Royal is just too big for Alaska. It travels west of Vancouver Island and has limited forward viewing with no wrap-around promenade. The ship board amenities were very good and the staff was excellent. Just not the best ship for Alaska. The naturalist was very good and actually offered to call cabins in the middle of the night if the northern lights were out.

Any suggestions on which ships in particular you had good experience on?

The Grand Class ships have a promenade that wraps around the bow for fantastic viewing and photo ops, like the Grand, Majestic & Sapphire.

Majestic is not a Grand Class ship and does not have a full Promenade deck.

Ships other than Grand and Sapphire have good Promenade decks as well. Some, such as Coral Princess (and maybe Sapphire?), have an extra wide Promenade with room for loungers as well as walkers. All non-Royal Class Princess ships - except for Island Princess - have full wrap-around Promenade decks. Coral Princess also has fore and aft viewing decks on Baja and Caribe decks.

Thank you for clarifying.
