Hilo 9:30-6:30--rent a car, ship excursion or other ideas?

Honestly I have not researched what we would like to do here yet (cruise is in January)--seems like in my past research waterfalls & volcanoes were on Hilo?

I figure if we rent a car we would only have it about 6 hours.

Ship excursions are mostly about $200pp.

Private options for touring?

Thoughts?

(We have been to Oahu--we love experiencing the gorgeous beauty of Hawaii. Hiking a waterfall was a highlight)

Volcanoes National Park and Rainbow Falls are both easily accessible from Hilo. I would rent a car so  you can decide the amount of time that you want to spend in any particular location.

Local help needed here……my suggestion is to not miss a loop of coastal road north of Hilo. It is called the 6 mile road, or the 4 mile road or something like that. It is narrow and RIGHT a on the cost through a bona fide  rain forest  with places to,stop and marvel at the dense vegetation etc. also a fun stop for amazing ice cream on the left going north!  You can reverse it too if you didn’t get enough to marvel at on one go!  Also, orchid farms on the south side of Hilo worth a look.  Another big favoutite of ours is the planetarium…..reallynwelll done  program of  interest to all. good lunch in cafeteria. Program we saw showed all the satellites in orbit around the earth….what a traffic mess!    Enjoy your stay.  Lave tubes neat. Drivin all the way down to the end in Park is rather underwhelming we found….you get the idea after about 10 minutes.

I’m going next month, we just rented a jeep for the day for $130 .  Not sure what we will do yet , I’ve put my husband in charge of figuring that out .

Volcano National Park is the best thing to see out of Hilo....
