Livorno/Pisa with public transit

Well, Livorno has its own "new Venice" area (a bit of a stretch, but that's how they describe it.  More about that here:  Livorno Experience – Scopri le Terre d'acqua della Toscana – Livorno, Isola di Capraia e Collesalvetti

Pisa is not far at all, there are bus tours from Piazza del Municipio, where the port buses drop you off in town.  You can also take the train on your own, it takes 15 - 20 minutes and costs just 2,70 euro.

From Pisa Centrale station to the Piazza dei Miracoli (the leaning tower, duomo, museum, etc.) is a little over a mile on foot.  There are public buses and taxis if you don't want to hoof it.

You probably have a long day in port.  Go to Pisa. You will be bored out of your mind in Livorno.

Spend a good bit of time exploring the buildings of Piazza dei Miracoli.  There is a lot more to it than just taking pics of the tower.

Another option, if Pisa doesn't do it for you, is the walled town of Lucca.  Also an easy train trip, albeit a little longer (about one hour, including a change of trains at Pisa).  The fare to Lucca is only 6 euro.

And on a long port day, the OP can go to both Lucca and Pisa (in that order).  Easy and inexpensive by train.

Although it is many years since we visitedLucca and Pisa together in one day, I do remember researching and finding a second train station in Pisa, much closer to the Field of Miracles than the Central Station, in fact maybe only 5 minutes or so on foot. We arrived into it by train from Lucca but when leaving for the return to Livorno we had to walk the longer distance to  Centrale Station.  Maybe Centrale  was served by more trains to/from Livorno than the other one or maybe it was a different line.  I cannot remember exactly, only  that we needed Centrale for Livorno..  I just now looked for the name of  the one beside the Field of Miracles  as I could nor remember it offhand and it is called Pisa San Rossore railway station.

Anyone taking the train to Pisa from Lucca or to Lucca from Pisa might want to very carefully research it (and timetables too) as it saved a quite long walk (and time) at least one way.

Anonmom it is very easy to take in both Pisa and Lucca in one day, and Lucca is a very attractive town to visit and highly recommended.(think of it as a Tuscan Gem)There should be plenty of info and photos to be found online to help you decide.

This is somewhat related to original topic , but for a day trip to Pisa from La Spezia Centrale on our port stop, I’m looking for clarification on train options. If we don’t plan on going to any of the 5 villages that day and we just want the round trip train (to/from) what website do we buy tix online ahead of time OR do we just buy the train tickets when we get off the ship and we get to the station in La Spezia? (I was getting confused with the reference to the Cinque Terre card) Thanks for any info!

You could save a few euros on the high speed train by purchasing in advance, but if you're late to the station the tickets are worthless and you'll have to buy new ones.

If you pick a time that allows plenty of pad time between your stated port arrival time and the train departure time, buying in advance makes things a little easier.

If you do, always purchase directly from the train operator, not a middleman:  IT - Trenitalia

Thanks so much! To buy in advance on Trenitalia, is it a single round trip ticket we get or do we buy 2 one way tickets for the trip there and back?

 Thanks again!
