Decided to get basic internet package to use wifi for email - please clarify for texting

I understand the basic internet package permits me to use WhatsApp to text with friends. I've never used that. Just read directions and am confused.  Do I leave mobile roaming off?

Would this be better than using the free MSC app to stay in touch with husband and friends on the ship?

Help with this would be appreciated.

If your messaging app uses data to send messages/texts (i.e. blue messages on iPhones), you can leave mobile roaming turned off.  3rd party messaging apps, like Line, WhatsApp, WeChat (if that's still around), all use data to send messages.

If your messaging app is sending messages/texts as SMS (i.e. green messages on iPhones), you'll need cellular service and will need to turn on mobile roaming.  The cellular service will not be included with onboard internet plans.
