Cell Phones in Alaska

Has anyone had any experience using a cell phone while on the Alaska cruise? Verizon tells me I can call from Juneau and Skagway, but not Ketchikan. I was wondering if I'd get a good connection.

I get cel calls from Juneau all the time and the reception is great, Ketchikan works also but sometimes drops the calls, i guess it depends on the location of the towers, lots of mountains in the way.

Verizon also told me I could get reception in Huna but could not, of course. There is no reception in Skagway because of the mountains. The ship cannot even get tv reception there. Received and made calls in Anchorage, Juneau and Ketchikan. Note that you will have to have an international calling plan to use the phone in Vancouver, Canada, however.

We have Sprint and we also had greeat service in Juneau and Ketchikan, nothing in Skagway.

 

We were surprised and enjoyed chatting with family. There were no "extra" charges.
