Shorts are welcome in the MDR on all nights including “formal” night. You will be more dressed up than others.

This was the MDR on Formal Night on the Wonder.

Just for info, over the summer I saw people turned away from the MDR on Anthem out of Southampton wearing shorts.

I sure would have made a problem for them - also sure they would let you in when you press the issue.... There is NO rule against shorts - so they have no ground to stand on!

I guess you could have pressed the point but I don't know how you would have stood as  I've just checked the cruise compasses and each day it clearly states shorts are welcome for breakfast and lunch only in the MDR.

The cruise contract does not give any clothing restrictions - it does not state that shorts are NOT allowed at dinner! The compass does not state that either! So they have nothing to stand on!

But we do not need to discuss further as the UK is of limits for me anyway - and everywhere else in the world there is no problem wearing shorts to the MDR.

Here's the compass from our Mariner cruise last year.  Note the section I highlighted...

Now, that is the ONLY day they have an "explainer" for the dress code (and it's on Day 5).  There is nothing on any other day (even with two "Dress your best" nights).

Where does it state it is NOT allowed for dinner? It does not even talk about dinner! And we all know if you raise a big stink at the entrance of the MDR - they will let you do whatever you feel like!

I could also argue my shorts are NOT from Bermuda!🤣

Always wear a T-Shirt and shorts - never a problem!

Well, it can easily be read that shorts are acceptable for breakfast and lunch.  Since it DOESN'T mention dinner, it can be implied that shorts are NOT acceptable for dinner.

Now, as far as whether they enforce it or not, that's a different issue.  I personally don't care what someone else wears.  I was just pointing out a Compass MAY (as I said, this was the only reference out of eight days and it came on Day 5) give an note on what they'd like.

Exactly this! They might like it that way - but in no way will they fight to enforce it!

I also doubt that even in the UK they would stand firm if you make a big scene at the entrance of the MDR - they are NOT risking to have a fight with a passenger over this!

Yea, because it's worth making a "big scene".

And are you REALLY that worked up over this?  You seem really excited (by your use of multiple exclamation marks).

Not really.  It wouldn't be that hard for Royal to have that say "for breakfast, lunch, and dinner".  If they really didn't want shorts at dinner, that's what they'd have the Compass say.

Love how some CC people do all this twisting and dancing around words to make it seem like there's a "no shorts" dress code.  There isn't.

Well, A, there's no dress code period, at least nothing that's enforced.  All I did was post what the compass said on a SINGLE day of an eight day cruise to point out the compass DOES say something about it.

Now, look at the text...

"Feel free to kick back in jeans, polos, golf or Bermuda shorts (for breakfast or lunch), t-shirts, blouses or sundresses."

AS WRITTEN, the ONLY clothing articles that limited to certain dining times are golf or Bermuda shorts.  EVERYTHING else listed (jeans, polos, t-shirts, and blouses or sundresses) have no listed limitations on when they're allowed.  Royal wouldn't need to say "for breakfast, lunch or dinner", they could have left the dining times out.

I really don't care what anyone else wears.  I'm too focused on my companions to care whether someone is wearing shorts and a T-shirt.  But to say the compass DOESN'T say anything about it is false.

Does RCI list anywhere that you can't wear clothing with obscene images or words?  So if I wore a shirt with a screen capture from "Debby Does Dallas" (if anyone doesn't know, it's a porn movie), can I make a "big scene" to get them to let me wear it?  I mean Royal has "nothing to stand on" because they didn't say I couldn't wear it, right?

Royal characterizes all dress codes as mere suggestions.  From the dress code website page:

But here are a few types of suggested attire you’ll see, grouped by item

So?

I'm not arguing that there is or is not a dress code.  I brought up multiple times that A) I don't care what others wear and B) Royal doesn't enforce anything.  Everyone seems to skip those because they think I'm criticizing what they're choosing to wear.

All I did was point out (contrary to what PP said) that there WAS something in the Compass (that WE received on OUR cruise YMMV).

I will not accept a bully from someone paid to work for me!

Are you implying that the cruise staff is "paid to work for" you? If that's what you think, you are setting yourself up to be disappointed. The staff on the ship work for RCI, that's who pays them and that's who they work for. RCI employs them to provide you with services based upon RCI's direction. I've always found the staff to go above and beyond to make my cruise enjoyable. However, if what a passenger wants goes against what RCI wants them do to that passenger will lose almost every time!

Can I wear clothing with obscene images/language into the MDR (or heck, anywhere on the ship) and tell the RCI rep he "works for me" and I'll wear what I want?

I would say almost 100% yes!

If you were to wear a obscene shirt in front of my daughters, "I would say almost 100%" I would trip whilst carrying a strawberry daiquiri that would find its way to said shirt. "Yes". Hell, I'd even pay for it if I didn't have a beverage package. The most tragic thing would be the lose of the drink.

You repeatedly used the terms "limitations" and "acceptable" with reference to Royal's dress codes/policies.  I was simply clarifying that Royal doesn't even purport to have any dress code at all, only dress suggestions.

There is nothing  to "enforce" because there is no rule.  That's my point.
