morrison Posted February 12, 2023 #1 Share Posted February 12, 2023 I’m scheduled for the Machu Picchu excursion in March on the Oosterdam. The US state department has issued a do not travel for that area and the website for MP shows it Closed. My TA and HA have no updates at all. IF the ship does dock at Peru I don’t want to spend 3 days aboard with no excursions in Lima bc there aren’t any available. Any suggestions. Anyone experienced this on a recent sailing. Thanks. Rare FlaMariner Posted February 12, 2023 #2 Share Posted February 12, 2023 I'm on this cruise also. We cancelled our own pre-cruise travel to Cusco and Machu Picchu. Right now, Machu Picchu is closed. As far as Lima, I just read this encouraging post on the South America board. These folks were recently in Lima and experienced no difficulties in enjoying their time in Lima. Of course, things can change but I'll take that info as good for now. (Also, check out our roll call if you have not already.) See you onboard soon!

I do not think you can get to and if you get there back from Machu Picchu with the present situation. Truly a shame, as it is an incredible place to visit. (We were there on an escorted land trip in 2019.)
OlsSalt Posted February 12, 2023 #4 Share Posted February 12, 2023 Lima excursion - the Larco Museum showcasing their stupendous Moche artifacts, with lunch in their garden patio, was such a lovely, gracious oasis in this increasingly troubled city. Hope you can at least see that in complete safety, since it is not downtown Lima..
chapi007 Posted February 12, 2023 #5 Share Posted February 12, 2023 We also cancelled our Cusco and Machu Picchu. Did not want to risk being stuck in cusco.
SueMo Posted February 12, 2023 #6 Share Posted February 12, 2023 There is the possibility Machu Picchu will reopen in a few days: https://andina.pe/ingles/noticia-peru-president-boluarte-meets-with-machu-picchu-mayor-full-story-928606.aspx The train service has reopened: https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20230208-peru-reopens-train-service-to-machu-picchu We have a pre-cruise trip planned there on March 16. If we cancel, we lose the airfare and entrance fees as our TA has already purchased those. If, however, the airport or Machu Picchu are closed on those dates they will give us a full refund. Postponing will be a huge expense. Our trip insurance doesn't cover "political unrest". We still have over 4 weeks, so we're toughing it out and waiting to see how things go over the course of this next month. As a plan B we booked a cancellable/refundable hotel room in Lima.
DCThunder Posted February 12, 2023 #7 Share Posted February 12, 2023 I saw a video earlier today of severe flash flooding in many southern Peruvian villages due to heavy rains. I'd post the link but can't find it right now.
