Fred Olsen Nordic capitals

Morning we are going on our first cruise in April with Fred Olsen on the Bolette, to the Nordic capitals.

Does anyone know if there is transportation from the cruise jetty to the individual capitals, if the ship is berthed away from the city centre.

If anyone has been on the Bolette and has any tips or positive feedback, that would be great to.

Thanks Kenny

Hi, and welcome to Cruise Critic

No personal knowledge, but you can learn quite a bit that's already been posted on these Cruise Critic forums ....

Your ports https://boards.cruisecritic.com/forum/116-northern-europe-amp-baltic-sea/

On that forum, at the right end of the blue strip near the top of the page, is a little search box.

Type into the box the name of the port, and click on the spyglass icon at the end of the box.

Give it a moment for the magic to work, and it will provide a list of all the threads which mention that port.

Here's the result of typing in "Flam"

https://boards.cruisecritic.com/search/?&q=Flam&type=forums_topic&quick=1&nodes=116&search_and_or=or&sortby=relevancy

If a port is large or secure (I doubt that either applies to Norwegian ports) a free shuttle is usually provided to the port gate.

If a port isn't walkable to the centre of town (that won't apply to most of your ports) the cruise lines normally provide a payable shuttle.

If any ports are tender-ports (ship doesn't berth in the in port, instead it moors off-shore and passengers are transferred by small "tender boats") there's no charge for using the tenders. On itineraries they're usually noted "by tender" or have a little anchor icon. It's worth checking out on the Fred Olsen forum what routine your cruise line uses for allocating seats in tenders.

Fred is a very sensible choice for a Brit's first cruise

Enjoy

Especially if you are a senior citizen!

Yes, from what I've seen (I used to drive cruise transfer coaches) Fred 's guests are mainly active recently-retired Brits.  And a very convivial bunch 🙂

Maybe post on the FRED OLSEN FORUM for best responses.

https://boards.cruisecritic.co.uk/forum/355-fred-olsen-cruise-line/

And if you list your ports of call that would be helpful as otherwise nobody reading your question  knows which "Baltic Capitals" are on your itinerary.

No worries, you will soon get the hang of posting for best results.😀

Unfortunately, it is not always enough to just specify the city – there are different docking options in Helsinki, Copenhagen and Oslo.
In general, there is no shuttle service to Fred Olsen, but depending on which berth there is a harbor shuttle bus in Helsinki and Aarhus.
Nynäshamn is 60 km south of Stockholm with the option of  train to Stockholm

In Copenhagen, Fred Olsen has also previously used a harbor 50 km from Copenhagen but more likely docking at Oceankaj - public transportation available from Oceankaj to city.

Cruise Critic is a fantastic forum when it comes to planning - and planning is important for a successful trip.

Fred Olsen Forum as well as the Bolette Roll Call for your current cruise is a good place to start

- it is also a good idea to ask specific questions in the Northern Europe & Baltic Sea Forum.

Nynashamn is a shame.

It's for Stockholm, but it's an hour away by train or road.

Most ships sail 3 hours and more thro the archipelago of islands, some so close that you feel you could lean out & touch the trees, to dock in Stockholm - the sail-in is more important than the convenience of  docking in the city centre.

Megaships aren't permitted through those narrow channels, they're too big so they stop at Nynashamn on the coast. Bolette is tiny, but I suspect that she lacks some of the mechanical aids considered essential for navigating those channels and therefore she too stops on the coast at Nynashamn.

The megaships have to moor off-shore because they're too large to berth in the harbour at Nynashamn but Bolette may be small enough to berth - check your itinerary t see f it says something like "tender" or marked with an anchor icon.
