Okay, so now we just need reports from folks going on current or upcoming cruises this month to report on the fan type and size they packed and whether NCL confiscated it. Eventually, we'll get enough data to figure out the perfect fan for cruise ships.

I have this one and sail in 18 days.  I'll let you know!

I’ve seen pics on fb of ppl hanging those smaller desk type fans from the ceiling with either magnet hooks or duct tape sooo I’m guessing this kind of behavior prompted the ban. Must be nice to come in the cabin and have one of those fall on your head. Then they just blanket banned because that’s easier than carving out exceptions.

i wont be surprised if that was the case. it is always those group of people that push things to the limit ruining it for everyone

I sailed on the Breakaway last week before the ban was altered and I took this small USB fan in my carry-on with no issue at all with security. Either they didn't notice it in my bag or they did and didn't care. I did put it in the cupboard each morning so the steward didn't see it.

This is clearly being done in the name NCLs sail and sustain initiatives. Notwithstanding, maybe NCL will soon be offering in room fan rentals. You heard it here first, lol. 😁😁

An electric fan could be $9.95 per person per day based on double occupancy plus a 20% mandatory service charge.

Battery operated fans could be $7.95 per person per day based on double occupancy plus a 20% mandatory service charge. Rechargeable batteries can also be rented for $.69 per person per day plus a 20% mandatory service charge, for our convenience.

For valued Haven guests, ceiling fans are being installed.

Fans can be selected as an add on in the app up until three days prior to sailing. However, if you add a fan to your cart and don't pay for it, your cruise will be cancelled and no refunds will be issued.

The new policy is subject to change at any time at NCLs discretion. Fans subject to availability. If the policy does change or fan availability is limited, customers will not be entitled to a refund.

SERIOUS /s

Is a CPAP on the exception list like hair care items for heat?  Cuz my CPAP is both a heating device (humidifier) and a fan. 🙂

The CPAP is a medical device and is allowed.

If you fill out the access desk form ahead of time, NCL provides the distilled water for the humidifier. I also had no trouble bringing my 7 inch USB powered fan onto the NCL Escape.

No problem.

Ask your room steward for distilled water if you want (we don’t bother).

And, most NCL cabins do not have power near the bed. We carry a 6’ and 12’ light weight extension cord which works for most rooms.

Thanks.  I was playing devil's advocate.  I've used my CPAP onboard for probably 20+ years of cruising.  I used distilled water for about 6 months and have just used tap water ever since.  A 5% vinegar rinse every weekend eliminates any scaling that might build up.  I don't even bring the humidifier with me on 7 day or shorter cruises.  A bit o' vaseline in the nostrils at bed time prevents any bloody noses or dry air induce viral infections.

A sincere thank you for the advice.  I was being sarcastic in a (failed) attempt to point out the inconsistencies in the policy.  Here here on the extension cord.  I forgot to pack one once and had a Rube Goldberg set up to power it.  I plugged it into the wall stretched the standard cord as far as it would reach.  Put the little worthless foot stool/vanity seat next to the foot of the bed and that made the hose reach just far enough to use as long as I didn't roll to my right.  Only made that mistake once.

I don't even bother with distilled water at home.  As long as I empty the water every morning and give it a good vinegar rinse every weekend there's no scaling.  Once a couple of years ago I was super busy and didn't do the vinegar rinse for about a month.  CLR (a lime remover) cleaned it right up.

Gotta admit, this made me laugh out loud. But I have to ask, couldn't your room steward have gotten you an extension cord? Or is that not a thing?

99% of the time My wife and I strive to be the most laid back guest and make it our priority to make our room steward, waiters, and bar tenders life as easy as possible.  We try to set a schedule to be up and out of the room at the same time every morning and not return until we are certain they are done.  Room is straightened before we leave with everything put away and the bed almost made.  I know they do so much more but we pretend they only have to change the towels and empty the trash.
Two nights ago at a restaurant (not on a ship) I ordered tacos and the food runner (not the server) brought me a burrito.  I was eating it and the server came by to check on us and was floored that I didn't complain.  I've called NCL 3 times to make certain that my cabin for the next cruise (Oct 22 TA from Southhampton - Can't wait!) has a note for the beds to be separated.  It's me and my adult daughter this time and last timothy put the beds together and then had to separate them.  I felt really bad because he had just put them together for us.  Same last name and all.

We were on an Alaska cruise in May and there was a couple BMWing to the maitre'd about something stupid.  I couldn't take it any more and walked up interrupted the entitled couple and started complementing the maitre'd and kept talking over the complainers until they gave up and walked away.

Few things piss me off more than people abusing, yes I think that's an appropriate word, the staff.  I don't think asking for an extension cord is abusive by any stretch of the imagination, and would have asked if it hadn't all worked out, but guess who gets recognized first when I walk up to a bar, or gets their laundry back that night, or gets brought an extra desert without asking?
The old cliché of catching more flys with honey and not being the boy who cried wolf serve me well.  Now, when you're the excursion desk on the Spirt and start trying to spin a falsehood, I'll knock your dick in the dirt pretty fast...and guess who the pursers desk (sorry I'm old guest services) believes when I escalate it.

tldr: Yes I could have asked, but it's not my style and it gives the wife something to laugh at and take pictures of.

I have 2 USB powered fans I just bought for our cruise. They are kind of tiny. I am packing them, maybe I will just pack one, in our carry on bags. I will leave them in the small box they came in....not likely they will see what they are in a tiny square box during xray but who knows. I just think it's pretty petty to ban a USB tiny fan...for what purpose? . I have hot flashes and my husband snores. I need this little fan.

I do too!!

I can’t sleep without it!

Does anyone have an update on this topic?  DH and I have some friends we'll be cruising with in 2025 and they are super nervous because they all sleep with fans.  They are first time cruisers.

2025 is a long time away. The best advice is to check the prohibited item list prior to departure. And also note that there are no outlets next to beds in standard cabins.

See current Prohibited Item List #32

Read the whole thread.  It was resolved a long time ago.  Small fans are allowed.

I sailed on the Getaway last month and brought a small USB fan that I bought on Amazon.  I packed it in my suitcase, no issues.  It’s small but surprisingly powerful and has good noise.  I like fans for both the ir flow and the noise.

I'm embarking the Joy this Saturday, I will have two small USB fans with me...I will advise if they make the gauntlet.  By small, I mean maybe 4 inches max in diameter...one may be smaller than that.

IF they take them, I will as for one on board...we'll see how that works if necessary.

So, was it confiscated?
