donaldsc Posted July 27, 2023 #26 Share Posted July 27, 2023 This is a general and not a specific comment. In any country if you stay at a hotel with an affiliation with an American chain it is usually going to cost more. They figure that many Americans will book there because they are afraid to book at a hotel with a name they have never heard of. Have you tried checking on smaller hotels that cater to Europeans. PirateWife Posted July 28, 2023 #27 Share Posted July 28, 2023 We used monasterystays.com in Rome to find a wonderful monastery to stay in at a very affordable price.
wjfan417 Posted July 28, 2023 #28 Share Posted July 28, 2023 We stay at Hotel Santa Maria in Trestavere and walk to most places. We’ve taken Uber black car service a couple times.

We are planning on arriving in Florence and staying 4 nites, then rail to Venice for 3 nites before boarding ship After cruise we plan to stay in Rome 4 nites. We desperately need help in finding hotels. The hotels our TA suggested are all running $1000 per nite and up. Is this normal? (but then again these arent normal times). Usually stay Marriott executive suite or similar for no where near this price. Want something near center of things but hate to think this is the expected rate. Any help is appreciated! Thanks Hotel Artimede, stayed here a couple of times, small rooms of course. Great breakfast. Close to everything
Oakton Girl Posted July 29, 2023 #30 Share Posted July 29, 2023 We very rarely stay in American affiliated hotels when in Europe. Go to a travel site and put in your dates. See prices and read reviews. Small guest houses and b&b’s can be found in great tourist areas with much better pricing. Good luck, but with prices high book something soon. njguy_south Posted July 29, 2023 #31 Share Posted July 29, 2023 (edited) For my mother's 80th birthday, in Rome we stayed at the Residenza Paolo VI. It is technically part of the Vatican, and they will stamp your passport, as you are actually staying on Vatican territory! On the rooftop terrace, we could see the pope (Pope Francis) standing in his window for the Sunday Angelis. The hotel was great, food was good, and the views were fabulous. PLUS you could walk right across the street to St. Peter's. Loved it!! Edited July 29, 2023 by njguy_south
Aardvaark Posted July 29, 2023 #32 Share Posted July 29, 2023 We enjoyed the Augusta Lucilla Palace last year. Couple of blocks from Rome Termini, lots of good restaurants and trattoria. No matter where you stay in Rome, you're going to use taxis to get to where you want to be, but they're not overly expensive. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Augusta+Lucilla+Palace/@41.9000645,12.4974977,18.54z/data=!3m1!5s0x132f61a5b42bca45:0x2a48d99c2b675ea2!4m18!1m8!3m7!1s0x132f6196f9928ebb:0xb90f770693656e38!2sRome,+Metropolitan+City+of+Rome+Capital,+Italy!3b1!8m2!3d41.9027835!4d12.4963655!16zL20vMDZjNjI!3m8!1s0x132f61a5a49d66f7:0xc8c2d52d54a4cd72!5m2!4m1!1i2!8m2!3d41.900112!4d12.497746!16s%2Fg%2F1vff2p8_?entry=ttu
