Cruising out of NYC

We are on a cruise leaving from either Manhattan or Brooklyn cruise terminal on August 14.  When will we be notified which terminal?  Our paper work states both terminals.  What is the least expensive way to get from La Guardia to the terminal?  Any hotel recommendations?  We are flying in two days prior.

Caribbean Princess will depart from Brooklyn Terminal on Aug 14th.

LGA to Brooklyn cruise terminal makes no sense if you fly in 2 days early.
Just look for a nice hotel in Manhattan.

We have free airport shuttle from our hotel.  I thought perhaps there were airport to cruise terminal transfers.

Ok, so you will stay at an airport hotel in LGA?
Yes, Princess offers transfers airport to ship. Give them a call.
If you are 4 or more pax, a private transfer could be less expensive.

As an ex New Yorker (was born in Manhattan) and one who is there quite often (to see DD and the grandkids) we have a few suggestions.  It is very likely that your cruise will depart from the terminal over in Brooklyn (Red Hook) which is not an area we suggest for an overnight hotel.  For those that want to stay relatively close, the Brooklyn Bridge Marriott is OK and within walking distance to some decent parts of Brooklyn.  But for the OP, since they are flying-in 2 days early, we would strongly suggest finding a nice Manhattan hotel in a decent location.  I hesitate to suggest a specific hotel, because there are many good options (in various price ranges) and choosing a neighborhood to stay in NYC is very much a personal preference kind of thing.   One can look at the usual online hotel booking sites and try to find some kind of decent deal, although NYC hotels tend to be a bit expensive and the taxes make things much worse.

Do not even think about staying near LGA as it is just not a particularly good area for somebody visiting NYC and wanting to do tourist things.  As to getting to the cruise ship, that can easily be accomplished by using Uber, a taxi, or having your hotel arrange for some kind of "Black Car" service  For going over to the Red Hook terminal, we tend to favor Uber since the price is pre-determined (and shows on the app) and traffic can be very slow those last few blocks (it backs up from the cruise port) adding to a metered taxi fare.

NYC native here.

Stay in Manhattan.  You have two days in NYC!!!  Stay in the heart of the action.  Pick a hotel that is close to your price point, nearest to places you'd love to visit.  Then, take an Uber or cab from the city to the cruise port in Brooklyn on embarkation day.

Getting from LGA to a Manhattan location is possible on the cheap via public transportation, a mix of buses, trains, and some minor walking, but, um, it's way easier to just take an Uber or Lyft.

Another New Yorker here.  Agree makes most sense to stay in Manhattan.  Hotels are very expensive and likely be even worse in August.  You can also look for AirBnB in NYC which can be in a great location and save some money (no one will make your bed though...).  Taxis and Ubers work well, just leave extra time for traffic.  There is a NYC taxi app called CURB that can be helpful.  As we say in New York "are we in a rush, or do we have time to take a taxi?"  Enjoy your cruise!!

We love to cruise out of New York--so convenient not to have to worry about airline flights.  We also go up to New York often just for sightseeing and fun activities.  I like the East side of Manhattan for hotels --very walkable and lots of shopping.  With two days in advance, you can enjoy the city and then take a taxi or an Uber to your port.

I will say you might want to check with Princess to see if they have blocked space in a hotel and will sell a package that includes transfers.  That might not be the cheapest, but probably the most efficient.  Enjoy!
