tring Posted August 5, 2023 #1 Share Posted August 5, 2023 We are from the UK and are sailing this area next month and want to buy a phone SIM card which we can use in both USA and Canada, for calls and data. Any suggestions for a service provider which will cover both countries or any other advice regards this will be appreciated. We are thinking we could possibly buy one before we travel at the end of this month, or perhaps pick one up in Boston, which is the first US port when we would need our phone. Our cruise is round trip from/to the UK and goes down the Canadian/US coast to NY and then returns back up to St John's before heading home. Rare 1025cruise Posted August 5, 2023 #2 Share Posted August 5, 2023 You will most likely not find a SIM that covers both Canada and the US. While I have a plan that will cover both, I don't think any of the prepaid ones will cover both.
Tracyken Posted August 6, 2023 #3 Share Posted August 6, 2023 I think we’re on the same cruise. I don’t know of a Sim that covers both but a PAYG Sim from Three includes USA. I’m going to use Skype for calls from Canada.
tring Posted August 6, 2023 Author #4 Share Posted August 6, 2023 (edited) Thanks for the replies. With the help of advice from an American relative, we are going for a T mobile one. It is a US company, but includes Canada as well for phone calls and data at £26. Our relative said they use a good partner in Canada, so should work well. I have also mentioned our choice on our roll call, but others may just want data. Skype is no good to us as we would both need to know about wanting to hook up at a certain time and we want to be able to contact our Canadian relatives once we are docked in their home city and also use data in NY and possibly other ports. We could rely on email, but sometimes that can take a while to be delivered. Edited August 6, 2023 by tring
Faeton Posted August 27, 2023 #5 Share Posted August 27, 2023 If your phone has the e-sim function (the last few gen of iPhones, newer Samsung and Google Pixel phones), you can purchase a cheap e-sim from KeepGo. Unfortunately the cheapest plan is sold out, but the one available is still only $13/1gig
