Hotel Safes

Are room safes in 4star quality Hotels in Barcelona secure?

With all the discussion about pickpockets, we plan to leave passports, cash etc in our pre-cruise hotel safe while we explore the city for a few days prior to embarkation.

Thanks

Your room safe will probably be as secure as anywhere.  You cannot guarantee though, so it is probably a good idea to think about security during the whole of your trip.

The best thing you can do is to carry as little cash as possible - plastic with solid pin numbers - it is true that people use 0000 or 1234 as their pin number and your robber knows that.  The ability to freeze your card as soon as you realise you have been robbed (the ability to do this through an app is such a help compared with trying to call your bank when you are under stress).     Just to be sure take the number you need to call the bank in case of emergency.

Split your cash and cards between you, and leave some in your room.  Take photos of your id and all of your travel info AND make sure that you keep these photos in cloud storage - your phone could get stolen and if you are like me you would be lost without this information.

Yes, your documents etc are a great deal more secure in your hotel room-safe than on your person.

That applies to any city & pretty-well any hotel.

You will not need much cash in Barcelona or elsewhere in Europe.

As well as being safer & more convenient, your Visa or Mastercard credit cards give you better value than changing cash from your currency to euros. Take at least two cards "just-in-case" and change only a little cash to cope with any outlets that don't accept plastic - some stalls, some taxis, etc - .and in case of a problem with your card/s.

If you don't have a Visa or Mastercard that's free of currency exchange fees, get one for this trip & for any future foreign travel. And ensure that you card is charged in local currency.
