Rare pappy1022 Posted September 2, 2023 #1 Share Posted September 2, 2023 I am pretty sure it’s a “all depends” answer but around what wind speed does it usually become unsafe to dock or tender?
papaflamingo Posted September 2, 2023 #2 Share Posted September 2, 2023 Whatever wind speed the Captain decides. 😜 Actually it's probably dependent on each ship's capabilities in regards to bow thrusters, etc. Also if a tug is available. We missed a port in Iceland last year on Navigator due to high winds. We got within 100 feet of the pier, we were in a port with no tugs available, and the Captain determined that we could not safely dock without tug assistance. The problem could be either not being able to get TO the dock due to winds, or not being able to get OFF the dock due to winds. But I imagine that each ship has its own limitations. The newer ships probably have better bow thrusters, etc. than an older ship like Navigator.
flossie009 Posted September 2, 2023 #3 Share Posted September 2, 2023 It probably all depends on a combination of: - the speed & direction of the wind - sea state and tides - configuration of the dock - the size of the ship - availability of tug assistance Ultimately it will be the decision of the Captain, under advice from the local Pilot. In some instances a decision not to dock may be because an adverse forecast means there would be difficulties for the ship leaving on schedule later in the day.
