Arctic Cruise Question - Northern Lights

We are considering an Arctic Circle cruise starting Aug 10 from Amsterdam. It's 12 days and one of the of primary reasons is watching northern lights.
Question: are northern lights visible from Northern Norway in mid August. We really don't want to book for this sole purpose and find out it's too early in the year.

I am afraid the sky does not dark  enough night to see the northern lights between april and the beginning of august, so I would not count on it.

The answer is Maybe.  I personally would not book a cruise if the main criteria is to see the Northern Lights.

 

With that said, I saw them north of Akureyri, Iceland on August 31 / September 1, 2017.

Do one in Winter or at least between October and March. Cunard and P&O offer some from Southampton.

We went close to the Summer Solstice and had 24 hours of daylight. Looks September is the earliest, but October is better. Basically, between the Equinoxes.

Someone on Facebook told me that in Tromso, which is the northernmost point of the trip, the nights are still bright in mid August, so there's no chance for the lights. However, what he said, you can see the lights in mid August more in the south where the nights are already dark. The ship will be sailing from Tromso back to Amsterdam between Aug 12 and 22, so maybe there will be a chance to see the lights somewhere along the way?
Anyone took that cruise in the past?

Summer is not the time to see the northern lights especially in the north. You need darkness and the point of going mid summer is for almost 24/7 daylight. If you’re going for a lightshow then go in the fall.

Also northern lights are never guaranteed. The sun has to do its thing, you have to be in the right area for that particular solar storm, the sky has to be clear, and the night has to be dark for it to all work out. This is part of what makes them so special.
