Suggestions for Post cruise for a night or two

We are ending a cruise in Rome and would like to spend preferably two nights somewhere but not in Rome or any other larger city.  Looking for something relaxing with that local vibe.  Then would be flying out of Rome.  At a loss.

Orvieto is a good choice, but it's a pain to get to from Civitavecchia.  Train connections require you to travel south to Rome, then turn around and go north to Orvieto.   You could travel by bus but that requires a change in Viterbo and difficult connection times (either too tight, or lots of time between).  A car service is the best, but most expensive, option.

What is drawing you to Orvieto?  Are there things in particular that you like to do or see?  Periods of history of particular interest?

There are other options that wouldn't require you to change hotels but would require an early morning car service or taxi ride, places like Tivoli (would require a car service from Tivoli to Rome for the flight),  or Castel Gandolfo (would also require a taxi or car service into Rome to get the airport train as the local train won't run early enough).

Orvieto has been recommended before by friends who have been there.  It is not too inconvenient.  Most importantly we are looking for a more relaxed place to be for a couple of days.  It seems like there is stuff to see and the Umbrian cuisine is a draw.  Will check out the other options as well.

We would be fine with Orvieto as long as you have a rental car!   A car works well (the drive is quite nice) and you can than drive to FCO and drop the car at the airport.  If staying the night before a flight you can drop the car in the evening, stay at the FCO Hilton, and walk between hotel and airport.

There are also some sea resort towns relatively close to the airport (we have enjoyed staying in Fiumicino) which also puts you within a few short miles to  the interesting ruins at Ostia Antica.

Another option for 1 or 2 nights is Tivoli (several things to do in this area) although the location is somewhat inconvenient given it is on the other side of Rome from FCO.

We have stayed in Orvieto and it is an easy train ride from Rome,  Termini.    But we would not recommend staying near Termini.   We agree with Hank, stay near FCO the last night. You don’t need a car for Orvieto, but it’s easy to leave it in the large parking lot by the train station, then you can explore both the town and the area.  Highly recommend the non touristy Citta del Pieve for beautiful church and art as well  local beef and cacio de Pepe.   In October it is truffle season, do try them!

We have also enjoyed Viterbo,  lots to see and do in the area.  A easy drive from Civatavecchia and FCO.  Particularly recommend,  Villa Farnese and the interesting monster gardens near Villa Lante.    Viterbo itself hosts some international music, and is an interesting place as well but not on most tourists radar.   If you go try the local speciality.  of olive and potato stuffed chicken.
