suprgrlx Posted March 12 #1 Share Posted March 12 Can anyone tell me what the Giant''s Causeway would be like for someone with mobility issues? I'm assuming that climbing on the rocks would be difficult on a pretty self explanatory way 🙂, but I haven't been able to find much on the trip from where a bus would drop us down to where we'd be able to see the site. I did see that you could rent a scooter at the visitor's centre, but being first-serve, I'm definitely nervous to rely on it.
gumshoe958 Posted March 12 #2 Share Posted March 12 The National Trust has a comprehensive access guide to the Causeway here: https://nt.global.ssl.fastly.net/binaries/content/assets/website/national/regions/northern-ireland/places/giants-causeway/pdf/giants-causeway-access-statement-2023.pdf Even if it doesn’t answer your specific question there’s an email address at the top so you could try sending them a message. From memory it’s about a 10-15 minute downhill/uphill walk to/from the stones on a paved road but buses can’t go beyond the visitor centre. MeHeartCruising Posted March 12 #3 Share Posted March 12 When I was there in 2023... It is indeed a 10-15 minute, mostly downhill walk from the visitor center to get to the site itself. Once down there, you will be able to see a lot of the site without walking difficulties, however, as mentioned, you probably won't walk out on the rocks that much. There was also a small trolly car run by the site that would transport people back up the hill if you want to use it. It arrived just as I was finished seeing what I wanted to see, so I rode it back up the hill. I can't recall if it also took people down the hill but I would imagine that it did. Especially someone with mobility issues. Quickly looking thru the linked document above, I didn't see mention of this "shuttle" service. But maybe I just missed it. Or maybe it's not always offered. I'm not sure. But I know I rode it back up the hill.
ABQrobin Posted March 12 #4 Share Posted March 12 I was there this past fall.... there is a bus that runs from the top of the hill, down to the main viewing area, and back. It is not free, so you need local cash or debit if their machine is working that day. I have a video if interested... we walked down, then rode bus back up.
WendyVF Posted March 12 #5 Share Posted March 12 The bus was 1 GBP per person each way last September. I walked down and took the bus back up!

BuckeyeMark Posted March 12 #7 Share Posted March 12 Do it! It's amazing, even if you don't hike out onto the rocks.

Agree...we did this with Mr. Blue in a wheelchair...took the shuttle bus both down the hill and back up.
WendyVF Posted March 13 #9 Share Posted March 13 I don't have mobility issues and still didn't climb onto the rocks! I could just see myself slipping and hurting myself. The view was still great from the flat ground.
