Go Through Customs/Immigration Twice

We have an overnight in Kobe.  We were thinking about doing a tour during the day, coming back to the ship for a couple hours and then going back out in the evening.

Would we need to go through customs and immigration getting off the ship in the morning and night or just the first time we get off in Kobe?

Based on our experience with Japan's strict customs and immigration, be prepared to go through each time you go ashore and upon your return to the ship (though when returning, we were often waived through). Line ups should be shorter going back out in the evening.

Only go through customs, don't carry any food items off the ship !!   By law you must carrying your passport while travelling on shore. All public transportation except taxi shut down at midnight, you know the Cinderella folklore 😜

Usually the overnights in Kobe are on a Japan cruise. In that case you don´t go through immigration at all. You just go through security - which is eas easy as anywhere else.
