San Diego Cruise Port - where to drop an Avis Rental?

Recommended Posts

We are on the Legendary Hawaii, Tahiti, Marquesas 35 day round trip out of San Diego Feb 15 2025 and will be staying in the San Diego area for a week before departure.  We are picking up an Avis at the SD airport and want to drive it a week later and drop it at the SD cruise port.  Does anyone familiar with the area know if there is a drop off close to the pier?  The addresses on the Avis website appear to show that the "Little Italy" Avis is closest to the pier, but I can't be sure.  Am hoping that we can get a taxi or a drop off from there.

Appreciate any experience you may have had.

Regards.

So a few things. First does your reservation have the downtown location as the drop off? If not you'll need to try and adjust that. The Avis location at the airport is company owned but the downtown locations are usually franchised. Sometimes drop offs from the airport locations are not allowed or carry a substantial one way drop off fee. Adjust the reservation so you can see what that fee is (or isn't) and if they will allow the drop off.

That location is 1670 W Cedar Street. Also check the hours-- sometimes these francised downtown locations have limited hours and can be closed on the weekends. If you are unable to drop at the downtown location the good news is the airport location is literally 8 minutes down the road.

The cruise pier is almost walkable from that downtown Avis location-- about 10 minutes. Otherwise a very, very short Uber ride.

Thank you!! That is exactly what I was looking for.   Big help. We will book today!

Definitely run both scenarios-- picking up and returning to the airport might be much less expensive. Also in my experience Avis tends to use their older cars on one way rentals dropping off at a franchise so going round trip from the airport might also net you a better rental car.

The good news here being that the airport location is still very close to the pier.

Very little difference in the car dropoff locations, but (as mentioned) business hours may vary.

Bottom arrow is the port, middle is Little Italy, top is airport... all relatively close.

We did that same itinerary in 2023 and loved it... enjoy!

The rental car center at the airport is north of the airport at 3270 Admiral Boland Way.

And there are major differences outside just the operating hours-- as in whether the satellite location is franchised or company owned which can result in substantial one way drop off fees.
