The Waterfront - (Deck 8)

Is there any portion of The Waterfront (either Port or Starboard) where smoking is NOT permitted?  (I remember from a previous cruise (2017) that the bar area outside of Malting's was totally filled with cigarette/cigar smokers which caused the indoor area to also be unsafe/unpleasant.)

Welcome to Cruise Critic.  Virtually the entire Waterfront is designated as a smoke free environment.  Smoking is only permitted near the bar.

Near Maltings?  On the Bliss, Joy and Escape I don't believe smoking is allowed in that area outside the cigar lounge.

the NCL website says something different: https://www.ncl.com/faq#!#smoking says:

Smoking, including cigars, pipe, electronic cigarettes and vapor smoking devices, is not permitted in or near venues serving food, the jogging track, outdoor sporting venues, children's pool areas, Vibe Beach Club, Posh Beach Club or The Waterfront.

As the cigar lounge is right there, is it possible you were just smelling spill-out of smoke from that?  There absolutely shouldn't have been smoking at the bar according to the policy posted on NCL's website.  The Waterfront should be all non-smoking.

Smoking is NOT permitted in any part of the waterfront.  Depending on the ship, exits from the enclosed smoking lounges exit onto the waterfront (from the humidor or smoking lounge). Most exit into the interior of the ship.

You’re probably correct.  It’s been a few years since we’ve sailed on one of NCL’s big ships.  Smoking was allowed on the Waterfront near the bar at that time.  It was not allowed anywhere else on the Waterfront at that time.

There can be the few people who don't care about rules, or want to smoke when the humidor room is full, so they stand outside the door on deck 8.

 

We have seen this only once or twice, and then fairly briefly. 

 

Smoking (no cigars) is limited to Spice H2O, or depending on ship, a semi enclosed area near the pool (Breakaway), or at a bar above the pool (Escape).  Casinos also, depending on ship, and only when open, but again, some people bend the rules.

Just got off the Bliss on Saturday and I can tell you that I could not be outside on the Waterfront on the side where the whiskey bar and cigar lounger were. The smell was awful and irritated my lungs terribly. So no, they weren't smoking on the Waterfront outside but in the cigar lounge and it permeated the whole inside, outside, and above and below decks in those areas. The other side of the Waterfront was mostly fine unless you were down near the smoking area.
