MoBro713 Posted August 21 #1 Share Posted August 21 We are considering an Alaska cruise that ends in Seward. We'll be flying back to Boston. How do you get from Seward to Boston? Do you fly from Seward to Anchorage and then from Anchorage to a major airport to get a Boston flight? Many thanks

Jim Avery Posted August 21 #3 Share Posted August 21 bus or train to Anchorage. If you want to do it in real style you can charter a float plane. 🍸

Many thanks I would choose the train which is about 1-1/2 hours longer than the bus. But it's probably a more scenic journey.
pavementends Posted August 21 #5 Share Posted August 21 Bus or train. I took the train in the standard class. Enjoyable but not a not-to-be-missed experience unless you are a train fanatic. I assume OP is making his own arrangements. The train tends to book up so reserve early if that is your choice. As always don't count on making tight connections so a night in Anchorage (at least) might be advisable. OP can also add a night in Seward. In Seward I wish I had chosen to do the hike to the Exit glacier. Accommodations in Seward exist but are quite limited.

That would be me.🙂 I don't think there are many choices for the OP. I thought the train would be nice because it travels through Moose Pass and I think the bus skirts around that. jebbs Posted August 21 #7 Share Posted August 21 It will be difficult to get from Anchorage to Boston. According to Google Flights it looks like red eye flights and some short connections, as all flights will be connecting. Seward is beautiful, if you have time, consider spending a few nights there, It is a very small town, you can walk from cruise terminal to train station and even to the town, but book early…hotel, car rental if necessary, even dinner reservations. Having taken the train both ways, Anchorage, Seward, Anchorage, the more beautiful direction to me was from Anchorage. Alaska is just majestic, just thinking about it, I want to go again!
sharkster77 Posted August 21 #8 Share Posted August 21 Next June after disembarking in Seward, we will be doing a 6 night extension that ends in Fairbanks. I've been casually looking at flights from both Fairbanks and Anchorage, and it's very possible to get back to Boston with only 1 connection, changing planes in Seattle or Minneapolis, to name 2 hubs. Someone recommended that if we had to hang around Fairbanks all day waiting for an overnight flight, to take the train (all day) to Anchorage and catch the red-eye from there---said scenery from the train is gorgeous. We'll still probably fly from Fairbanks--after 17 days, we'll be ready to go home!
Rare beanpittsburgh Posted August 22 #9 Share Posted August 22 We just got back from Viking Alaska trip in July. We had a 2 1/2 scenic bus ride from Seward to Anchorage. There is road construction going on now with sometimes a 1/2 hour delay. We were lucky and timed it just right and had no delay. For reference, we left the ship at 815 for a 220 flight out of Anchorage. 1

Were you able to get home with only 1 connection, or more than 1? We live near Boston, so our routes may be similar.
Rare beanpittsburgh Posted August 22 #11 Share Posted August 22 Sharkster Viking originally had us fly to San Fran and then Chicago and finally into Pittsburgh. We were able to change flights and fly into Denver and then Pittsburgh, thus saving us 1 connection and several hours of waiting. Our flight to the ship was Pittsburgh to Toronto and then Vancouver. Our flight out of Toronto was delayed 6 hours. Fortunately, the Captain held off sailing until all of us were aboard. Not happy with AirCanada at all. They could have handled the delay better. By the way, we had to have our luggage outside our room by 10pm the previous night. The luggage was sent on ahead of us and arrived at the airport early the day of departure (we tracked using air tags).

We usually pay for Air Plus so we can choose our own flights and carrier. We like Delta, so when we pick flights soon, we'll see if we can get what we want. Zippeedee Posted August 23 #13 Share Posted August 23 I just finished the reverse cruise from Seward to Vancouver. I’m currently on a Jet Blue red eye from Vancouver to Boston. If you fly from Anchorage to Vancouver it should be an easy connection to Boston. You should also be able to connect to a non-stop through Seattle. I used Viking Air plus and only paid for my seat upgrade.

Next June I will be pretty much doing the same as you, except going from Fairbanks to Boston. Going to Vancouver we are expecting one connection at most, and same coming home. We like Delta, and I think that will be possible. Fairbanks seems to have just as many flights as Anchorage, connecting to many of the same places. I seem to be getting over a health hiccup right now (fingers crossed!) and hope to see my travel agent to book flights thru Viking Air Plus soon.
rmalbers Posted August 23 #15 Share Posted August 23 The train is scenic but there are parts of it that do run right along the road. If you want to spend extra time there are great places you can stop and explore along the way.
