Cash in Vietnam

I'm reading that the US dollar is welcome in Vietnam.....We will be touring for just one day (Ho Chi Min City) so thinking I'll be fine with small US bills for tips, drinks, taxi's, buying stuff, etc. 

 

Am I thinking correctly?

Yes you are, sort of.😉

 

Unless things have changed, small bills, ideally 5's and 1's, but new or in as new condition as possible.  IE no tears, no doodles or other scribbles, preferably no fold marks either. Your bank should be able to supply.

On the other hand, are credit cards widely accepted in Ho Chi Min City?  In particular, for restaurants, tourist shops, and maybe taxis?

Credit cards are accepted almost in every shops and restaurants in Saigon.

Not sure about taxis as I only use Grab (a service similar to Uber/Lyft) and pay cash for my rides.

I have never had Vietnamese Dong on short cruise visits - I have paid minor expenses with us$ and larger amounts with credit cards.
