sharkster77 Posted August 25 #26 Share Posted August 25 (edited) Some snips from My Viking Journey--excursion is repeatedly used, not tour. Also went to viking.com, the term 'excursion' is used repeatedly there as well. Edited August 25 by sharkster77

Maps and routes were available on the pier. We were greeted by delightful people including little girls having a lot of fun. If you went straight back here are examples of what you missed. Quaqortac Nanotalik These pictures bring back such great memories! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. We loved both stops.

In fact, there have been posts like this before and I commented that I'll bet some ports in Alaska were like this, before mass tourism started (and ruined them). I hope these types of places don't turn into that and stay the way they are. I think this was the place where there was one tourist shop and they had, mostly all, stuff made by locals, just beautiful things for purchase. (and they were selling a lot of it) I got a beautiful beaded tree decoration which I bought from a table set up outside an adult elderly day care centre. The gentleman was so excited I was buying it (I tried to tell him he should be charging more than 10 euros). They invited us in to see everyone doing the beading which was the craft activity of the day. Everyone was so happy and busy. The lady in charge explained that during the tourist season they do crafts each day to immediately sell and the money they make paid for extra winter treats when it was less fun. The older people get a real mental boost from working on things together and seeing who buys them I travel for memories like that, not to be always herded in buses all the time or tramping behind a lollipop only experiencing what someone else decides. Structured tours, excursions what ever you call them have their places. But not in every port and certainly not in Greenland or on tiny islands. 14

Now, I'm going to have to return because I missed the Greenland beer when were there last year.
Planning to cruise Posted August 27 #32 Share Posted August 27 It was in Quartotoq that we passed a meat stall. Lets just say they eat parts of the animal that we may not such as the head. On display, the whole thing, ready prepared for the pot.

Especially if I have gotten to know a couple of beer drinkers at the bar onboard, so I bring back some for everyone to try. Found some really interesting stuff a few years back on a cruise down the east coast of Africa -- Kenya, Seychelles, Madagascar and more. And I log them in a book for reference.
