Train From Civitavecchia TO Rome

Hi Would like to know if the train station is in walking distance from Civitavecchia pier. If not are the cabs waiting at the pier to take you and the cost. When taking the train into Rome how close are you to Vatican City and what would that stop be called. How long would it take on board the train. Thankyou Carol

So many questions,, but we do have the answers. In the port the station is within walking distance if you like to walk.....its perhaps 1/2 mile give or take a bit depending on the exact docking position. Once you exit the port (this is a bit of a hike) cross the street and turn right and continue down the sidewalk a few blocks until you see the small station (the entrance is right along that sidewalk). In Rome, its a little more than a mile walk (as the crow flies) from the Stazione to the Vatican. You might be better off using public transit or just grabbing a taxi. Rome is a sprawling city (several miles across) so you either do a lot of walking (that is us) or you can use taxis, subway, buses, etc. The train ride from the port to Rome is about 1:10 min each way...and there is usually 2 trains per hour. When you buy your ticket (make sure you tell them you want "same day return" you must validate your ticket in the machine (on the platform or near the platform entrance) before you board your train. This validation procedure is pretty standard in Europe and it time stamps the ticket. Failure to do this can get you a hefty fine from the conductor.

We shared a taxi with another couple to get to the train station in Civ. If your first destination in Rome is the Vatican, you should get off at the first station in Rome, Stazione San Pietro. From there, it is a short 10-minute walk to St. Peter's Square.

How much does the train cost?

It seems that the train is 12 euros....one way. One other thing, there is a port bus that is free that we used the last two times we docked in Civitaveccia which at least takes you out of the port (as Hank mentioned, it can be quite a walk depending on where your ship docks). Oh, we did tip the driver...he has a little basket next to him.

When you get to the train station in Civitavecchia, ask about availability of the one day unlimited travel ticket called "BIRG." It was 9 Euros in June 2004, and it's good for the entire day on the regional commuter trains to/from Rome (except for the occasional high speed trains) and on subways and buses in Rome.

 

To return home at the end of the day, Departure boards and find the platform "binario" where the train to Civitavecchia will pull in. Do not cut it so close that you don't have one back-up train.

 

You can get the train schedule for your date of travel at http://www.trenitalia.com (select English). Input Civitavecchia and Rome, date and 7a. You will see the frequent morning commuter departures. Select a departure time you think will work for you, click the train number and see the detailed itinerary with station stops and times between Civ and Rome's central Termini station. You can then pinpoint the intermediate stop at S. Pietro. Double-check returns to make sure you target the next-to-the-last train. Better to have a backup!

With only having a day in Rome,we took the "hop-on..hop-off" bus..#110(13E).We started at the Termini ,but one of the stops is on the street,directly in front of St.Peter's..the bus stops facing St.Peter's....it gives you a great over-view of the city,with ear phones,in your language..and then you can go back to or stop at a particular spot and tour.Get a good map of the city...you'll be surprised all you can see....we hopped back on and the bus took us to the train station !!!!! We planned on the 3:35 train back to the ship(there was one after that if a problem).

 

I brought back a lovely fridge magnet(from one of the little tabac shops) and it brings back great memories of my trip !!!

 

Rome is one of my favourite cities...enjoy your cruise !

Hi 4 cruisers...can you tell me a little more about this free port bus please. where do you get on it, will it take luggage, and most importantly does it go anywhere near the train station? we will be coming the other way..Rome to the cruise port, and wonder about getting from the station to the ship. thx for the info

What a great site... pictures too!!! Can't go wrong!! I assume the shuttle bus takes people and their luggage from the port entance TO the ship as well as vice versa. Anybody done this? If you get a limo to take you to the ship can they go into the port and deliver you close to the waiting area to board or not?
