The Ships Doctor Gave Us A Sheet Say It Was "norovirus" .

Symptoms //extreme Nausea ,vomiting And Diarrhoea ..all At The Same Time...abdominal Cramps ,headache, And Fever May Also Occur.

It Last Between 1 To 3 Days ,our Strain Was About 3 Days , The First Day You Are Really Out Of It..

The Virus Is Very, very Contagious..thus Thats Why They Quarantine You To The Cabin . Then Your Partner Will Get It Too..so Much Fun.."not"

Thanks For The Info On The Other Site..i'll Go There..

Have A Great Trip On The 29th... Sure You Will Be Fine..take Care..foggy

Sounds like what I had when I was visiting (non-cruise) in FL last November. You can get it anywhere, any time from any source. It's actually a very common virus.

Great! We're on the Dawn next week and I am not looking to come down with this virus!!!!! We were on NCL Star last November and thought it was really good that at every dining area, as well as the casino, they had those hand sanitizer stands so that it would help prevent spread of bugs. Has Princess started using those too?

Yes, princess uses the hand sanitizers too. However, they're not truly effective unless everybody is using them. You can sanitize your own hands before you enter, but the minute you grab that big serving spoon in the buffet you are "re-infected" so take a small bottle of your own purell to use after you sit down with your food, before you touch anything. Disinfectant wipes are also good to wipe down commonly handled objects in your stateroom (phone, tv remote, doorknobs, etc...)

Many people think that using the hand sanitizers is for your protection. Actually, it is for the protection of everybody else. They are there to keep passengers from spreading the virus to food. The norovirus enters the body by food, not by touch or any other way.

It only takes one infected passenger who doesn't use the hand sanitizer on the way to the buffet to spread it to dozens of other people.

If you use the sanitizer on the way to the buffet, you will still get sick if someone else, who is infected, did not use the sanitizer and has touched the food.

It is unlikely to get it from the regular dining room. If you want to be extra careful not to get the norovirus, avoid the buffet.

Tom - sounds like a good plan regarding the buffett. Although the OP said that there were 16 Crew ill too.....so one wonders if their habits are suspect as well.

Guess I'll just pray! Hopefully not to the "Porcelin Gods":o

I looked at that site listed above (thanks btrojanoski) and the Dawn was not listed even though the site seems to be very up to date. Maybe it will show up later. Anyway, the number of sick seems pretty low (usually less than 5% of passengers), so it looks like there is a matter of bad luck involved.

Fuzzy Daze: Since you actually got sick on a cruise, I am curious, how often did you eat in the buffet on that cruise?

I was on the same cruise (on the same floor B 301). My 3rd cruise, I found the ship move more than any other cruise I've been on, (my 3rd) but I was never sick. We luved the cruise, but have to admit the beds where very uncomfortable and the room was incredibly small, I'd like to book a mini suite next.

I think you got sick that Friday from being tied up next to the mercury in San Diego our Friend going on it couldn't even board till after 3:00;) they have had the virus for 2 or 3 weeks

On the Dawn, only went to horizon on the 1 st day, food up there didn't look very good to me!!!

dining room food above average, lobster best I've had on 40 cruises:)

I never heard of anyone being sick on this cruise

We had a great time, Dawn may be 9 yrs old but its in top condition, our 3rd time on her

It took me quite a while to realize it isn't from touching the food, but instead it is mostly from touching the serving utensils.

You are right, it is possible to get norovirus from an infected utensil, but it still has to get into your stomach. So if you get it on your hands, you would have to put your finger in your mouth, or touch food that you are about to eat.

To see more information take a look at the Center for Disease Control site:

You can get the norvovirus without ever eating in the buffet. Having spent 24 hours up close and personal with the dreaded little bug on my last cruise, I truly believe that it is not necessarily a bug that you only get from food (or dirty utensils). It can live on railings, poker chips, any spot that many people touch. I never ate in the buffet, but did get sick mere hours after handling poker chips in the casino - to make matters worse, I lost in the casino too!

The good news is that if one sailing is infected - the next sailing doesn't have to be affected.

I was on the Sun Princess last year with an outbreak of 6% the first week. The second week, they still took all the precautions (they served passengers at the buffet, etc..), and there were no cases the second seek.
