Casual dress on Formal nights

Hello Everyone :

I score 20 ..... that means I am entitled to be on my balcony all evening on formal nights, thanking God for the scenery and wildlife while enjoying some hors devoirs with a good wine, ordering a great meal for dinner, and probably dance with my DW until the sun goes down ..... maybe at 11 pm.

Last question :p ----- is it Ok. with Everyone, for Me to go to the casino to spend a dollar at that time ?

Thank You All for a, more than expected, large thread, I enjoy every post and All were very usefull.

I´m tempted to post the same question in other cruise boards to see if they think the same and, with some luck, send Me back to HAL.

I don't know Mozart ,

i scored a 20 also and the way I see it I should be spending formal night on the balcony of a Motel 6 doing the nasty with convict girl .

I figure I'm entitled seeing I had to spring for dinner after she maxed out her visa on all that Victoria Secret stuff she bought......OK OK so I look at the labels while she is in the shower ...Knock me down to a 30 *LOL*

My dirty little secret - those 20 points of snobbery I got are reserved for people who use IM or Leet-speak on message boards. U n0 wAt 1 m33n?

Oh thats Ok Fridayeyes

Everybody hates them *LOL* :) :) :)

You are still OK in my book :)

It appears, Brian, that we have more in common than arriving at Immigration in our finest nightclothes. I, too scored a 30.

Knew I liked you! :D

Greg, I too remember your sincere apology to No-No. I also remember several nasty digs she has posted about you since. You are a finer person than I, as I would have written her off ages ago. You are still trying to be a peacemaker.

They have to wear business suits all week at work. They are on vacation now and want to kick back.

Rita,

Indeed. At least, that's the excuse we hear about 50% of the time. The other 50% of the time we hear the obverse: "They don't have to wear business suits all week at work, hence they don't want to wear them on vacation." :) In short, those of us who like formality just can't win, can we? :D ;)

By the way, I like a multi-tasking man. While having a "great" time on your cruises you can approximate in percentages (NO LESS) how many people are dressed to code and those that aren't.

:) I can approximate (i.e., "guesstimate") broad-range percentages based upon a rough sampling of those I see in the show lounge. But ... half the time it's not me who comes up with the figure, it's my traveling companion: Christopher is in the clothing business -- he's rather high up in the technical design division of a major clothing manufacturer -- and, hence, noticing what other people are wearing is an occupational hazard with him. I've caught on to his means of observation by watching him do it for nearly 10 years.

I never saw anyone ever spoken to who were in public areas dressed casually on formal night. They were right at the Purser's Desk, and drat if he didn't turn a blind eye to those people! How do you like that?

I've not seen people "spoken to" regarding the dress code very many times myself. When I have it's always been in the dining room, and I would guess I've seen it happen a total of only 5 or 6 times in my over 100+ days on HAL. Most of the time I gather that people are either dressed "close enough" to the code to be overlooked or the staff people in question just don't care.

Of the 5 or 6 times I've seen it happen, on several occasions the people in question were trying to get into the dining room on a formal night dressed in ratty, cut-off jeans and tank-tops (or the equivalent). I once saw a guy asked to come back with a shirt when he tried to enter the dining room for lunch without one! I would trust that no one here thinks that trying to dress thusly is "acceptable?" Or, does my thinking that such is "unacceptable" make me a snob, a stuffed shirt, judgmental, or intolerant?

Then, there are the very few cases where I have witnessed men, who were dressed in what would be acceptable on a casual nights, asked to go put on a jacket and tie for formal night. But, as I've said, such has been a rare occurrence ... rare enough that I've only seen it a couple of times in 100+ days. Hence, I'm not surprised that someone who has only been on HAL for 10 or 14 days hasn't seen it happen, ever.

I was frankly more concerned about those that had glass bottles and drinks in the pool and hot tubs. Ever get a piece of glass in your foot ? You'll see visions.

Yes, it HURTS. Painfully so. And, yes, such concerns me too. As does poor personal hygiene leading to the spread of Norwalk virus. Indeed, that is a FAR greater concern for me than dress-code violations. It's just that discussing dress-code violations is more fun. :)

Anyway, in summary, this seems like a site you consider yours to guard and guide, as it is only a mild diversion to me in a very busy and fulfilled life, I say enjoy yourself.

It's hardly mine to guard and guide. I just enjoy posting here, have made many friends here over the years, pass the days, weeks, and months between cruises here, and learn a lot here too. Yes, I post a lot here ... but I'm not the most frequent poster here ... not by far. :)

Thanks, Heather!

I loved the snob test. I scored a 30 ... which didn't surprise me at all (and particularly not when I noticed how some of the questions were asked. :D )

The difference between 20 and 30 is established in how you answered the question pertaining to the use of "Grey Poupon." :D

I'm glad that people are now having fun with the word "snob" and no longer referring it to an "epithet" Way to lighten up, everybody. By the way when I spoke of casual dressing, I in no way meant people showing up in cut off's or T-shirts. I'm talking about Docker's,golf shirts, pants/skirts and blouses for the ladies. For those who show up in shorts and shirt for the show's -fine by me.

;) And to think - it's only my dislike for ALL condiments that has kept me from creeping toward snobbery, LMAO!!!:p Very slight changes would slant results the other way, but it was still a lot of fun. I just love taking tests. Even looked forward to exams sometimes (in a masochistic way).:D

Peggy,

I had hoped that such was your position. Yet, one can never tell ... I've seen people post on this board that ANYTHING should go ANYWHERE and ANYTIME. It is, after all, their vacation. If they want to wear shorts and a muscle shirt in the main dining room on formal night, that's their business! They never wear anything else than shorts and muscle shirts, anyway ... why should they have to buy or rent a suite for just a 7 day cruise??? Or ... at least, that's the kind of arguments we've seen around here, from time to time, from some people.

As for what people wear in the main show lounge ... it's fun to look down from the balcony at what people are doing and wearing -- I'm a "watcher" ... people are funny. But, when the lights go down and the show starts, I could care less myself. Still, it's a good "gathering place" for one to get a good view at what about half the passengers are wearing.

Yes!!! The Grey Poupon did me in and put me on the shady side of snobbery;) . However, I did say I would sleep with someone who's been in prizon for 6 months so I should get points for that:D . Still, the question might really be would he sleep with me???? LOL!!

It was fun to lighten almost everyone up for a little bit. I'm just feeling too good about life these days to see us all getting upset about what we're wearing on a cruise.

I'm just happy I'm healthy and well enough to go on them. Happy Sailing, Everyone!:)

(pssssst ... just took the test again and said I've never had Greg Poupon and re-thought one other answer and YES ... down to 25 ... feel ever so much better)

Grey Poupon makes me more of a snob?!?

...and I thought it only helped me make great salad dressings!

(which I never make in my Rolls Royce...)

I so love multi-functional condiments!

(I prefer Miele Dijon Mustard anyways - so much more Expensive and difficult to find than plain old Grey Poupon!)

:D

I don't know...I said no to the Grey Poupon, but I also said I wouldn't sleep with the felon. I still scored a 20.

So I guess you can still be a non-snob and not sleep with felons. It's all in the numbers. :)

Do you know what's really good? The new wasabi mayo! It is amazing.

Linda, I wasn't under the impression that the man was a felon. The quiz just said that he told me he was in prison for 6 months. I'm assuming he was innocent and let go free when new evidence was found:) .

I actually only use Grey Poupon, but I wanted to see what would happen to my score;) .

Every cruise-line that I have been on has formal nights....WHY??...because the majority of people ENJOY them .... I LOVE them, I enjoy seeing all the people dressed, I enjoy the elegant settings, perhaps reminiscent of times gone by....of a simpler time.... I enjoy seeing women in gowns and their finery, they look radiant and so glorious!!! I make it a point to express how wonderful they look and their beauty, too often in life we do not get that opportunity.......... I can honestly say that no one has ever been offended when they were complimented and to tell someone they are stunning, I am sure they were not upset ..... I enjoy seeing my grandson (10) wear his tux ..He looks sharp and he enjoys the attention he gets, and I know he FEELS good being dressed up ..... it makes other people HAPPY to see others dressed up..... sometimes it JUST makes sense ..... I love to wear my shorts & flip-flops more then anything..... that is what I am MOST comfortable in....but sometimes you have to think BEYOND YOURSELF and think of others.....that is what I feel about formal nights.... it is NOT just YOUR night, but it is a night for others as well..... Now if you will just come up to me and tell me how handsome I am in my tux ...I will be VERY HAPPY as well !!! :) happy cruisin' Dan

Way to go, Dan!

It's always the women who expect - and are given - compliments. I'll remember to compliment some men on my next cruise.

It's not always about me me me!

One - I just sailed the Westerdam for the first time (usually cruise Princess) and found HAL pax to be more relaxed about formal wear in general. It was especially hard to distinguish between semi-formal and casual nights. While I took satin pants and a beaded top, many were much less formal.

Two - don't forget about room service from the dining room menu on HAL - a special treat to this Princess cruiser. One of the formal nights DH felt ill and we ordered lobster to the room. With the extra sitting area and coffee table HAL provides, it was an almost perfect place to dine. A balcony would be even better!
