If we get REALLY good, above and beyond service from a particular waiter, we'll leave a little extra. But, it's not required. We do tip the room stewards extra if we are happy with their job. We also tip the conceirge and butler (suite amenities) since they are not included in that tipping policy.

`then do people tip extra in the restaurants...doesnt this cover everything?? do you tip extra to room steward?? just curious..thanks

We did tip extra in the pay restaurants. There will be a place on the reciept to add in the tip if you don't want to use cash. We also tipped the room stewards extra because they made us feel at home and treated us very well. Tipping the stewards extra is ENTIRELY up to you. It is not required and you should not feel obligated to do so.

I will be in a mini-suite on the Sun. I believe we will have access to a concierge, but to what degree, I'm not sure. What is appropriately tipping policy for the concierge? Is it a percentabe, per day, or some other factor? Thanks!!!

Hello tpear3

I've seen this question on the boards many times. I've yet to read a definitive answer. I have access to a concierge too this time around.

Some tip as they go...seems to be around $5 per assistance. But many pay at the end (read a couple of post that pay $40 at the end).

I figured I'll use that as a guideline unless I see something more specific before my cruise in August. I plan on paying per use simply because that's they way I like to do things.

I plan on using the service for dinner ressies and early tenders.

I have read that people go to the specialty restaurants and tip 20.00 per meal extra..and this is on top of the 10.00/per person per day...this could get quite costly....if you get good service in the restaurant at night does the 10.00/per person /per day cover this?? for outstanding service i would leave a little extra..and defintley the kids clubs i would as well and maybe the room steward and if i order room service...but for the regular dining do you actually leave a bit of cash each time....it says on the NCL website the 10.00 should cover it and if someone goes the extra mile for you can give them a gratuity....do most people for general dining every day???

I would say that most people at most meals do not tip extra, especially in the regular dining rooms. But occasionally, when they encounter exceptional service, they do. I wouldn't worry about it. You'll know it if you receive the kind of service that deserves an extra gratuity.

Normally the $10 covers about everything. We do tip extra in the specialty restaurants but certainly not $20; more like $5 or $10 period. If you order room service it is expected you will tip a $1.00 or more, depending on what you are ordering. Don't be too concerned as long as you remember the kids club and the councilors. The rest is up to you. NMNita

We were on the Star in January and the couple we were travelling with had two young children. On the formal night we did not like the Service we recieved, so the next night we went to Aqua. Our server Devon was fantastic, he went above and beyond and was so good with the kids. He got down to there level let them take there time in ordering. We all noticed how wonderful he was. So we all left a nice tip for him. We all stopped the Matre D to let her know how wonderful he was, and we also asked if we came back another night if we could get him as a waiter again. So for the next three nights we had Devon, and he always remembered our names! We even bumped into him in port and he was just as friendly and nice there! On the last night of the cruise we requested Devon and were told due to the fact we were only a group of 5 and Devon was working on table of 8 or more we would not be able to sit in his section. We were a little upset but also understood, then the MD walked by and saw us and said oh you here for Devon, we explained we had to sit elsewhere he said nonsense and seated us at Devons table. So if you find this kind of service definitely tip!

We didn't tip in the resturants but we did tip our room stewards. I didn't feel at all like they expected a tip. Everyone seemed very happy to do their jobs to the best of their ability. The service was excellent so I think it is up to you to decide at the time. I tipped our room stewards more than I would usually but that was because of the extra attention they gave my daughter when she wasn't feeling well. They really made her feel special.

"The Kids Club" ?? What??

I have never cruised with children before, but we are looking into it for Summer 2007. I had no idea that the counselors at the kids club needed tips. Someone help me determine what to do there . . . please.

The counselors at the Kids Club are not included in the $10/day tip pool. Let's face it if you're tipping the people who keep your cabin clean it seems only fair that the people watching your children be tipped!! I would even go as far as saying that 'watching the children' isn't a justifiable term. They do tons of activities with them. They take them to shows that are appropriate for them, on treasure hunts throughout the ship, etc. They do a fantastic job with the kids! My daughter was in the 2-5 year old group and absolutely loved it. She couldn't wait to go every night after dinner. I'd say she went about 5 nights during the cruise and we tipped the counselors $40 at the end of the cruise.

I will tip extra for service above what might reasonably be expected - so on our last cruise on the Sun, we tipped our cabin steward because he did many extras for us. He seemed pleasantly surprised when we tipped him and never acted like he expected a tip.

Ours too on the Sun: she was thrilled with the extra $20.00. No one needs to feel obligated to add to the $10 but it is a nice jesture. I look at it this way, I have spent so much on the cruise what is another $20, $30 or perhaps a few more for service above and beyond? NMnita
