I saw a man steal a bathroom!

Recommended Posts

Just a thought, this could be another reason the cost of cruising continues to rise. Those people who feel it's perfectly OK to take those things will probably end up paying for them in the long run & so will we! Please don't do that! The items may seem small & incidental but it all adds up in the end.

A Friend of Mine took a bunch of bathroom stuff from a Holland America Cruise. His main floor bathroom is now totally decked out in HAL memorabilia. It is pretty cool.

Sorry, but you loose me here, I can´t see how it can be pretty cool to have a bathroom totally decked out with stolen items ???

And I assume that your friend didn´t buy this stuff as you said he took it.

So is this the mood of todays society to think it´s cool to steal and put the loot out to decorate the house.

I´m not sure how your friend would feel when I would be a guest in the house and take all things I like when leaving to stuff my home. Well think about it, I doubt it would be considered as pretty cool.

Sally!!!...Welcome back to both you and Rick from your B2B part 2. How was the cruise?

Wow that is something to take all the bathroom stuff, but to put into a clear plastic carry on is nerve!

Alexis...thanks for the smile....those varnished breads are neat, but an old lady in a tug of war with the chef.....OMG! :D

PhoenixCruiser, I too worked hotels and same thing we would find all kinds of stuff in lockers. But the saddest thing was when a guest would report something missing we would always have to do a door lock interrogation and question the housekeeper of that suite, inspect her cart and so on. Only once did we find the "goods" on her cart and she was fired on the spot. Sad.

I have been to a few hotels that now post what each items cost. Robe $75. Bath towel $9. Hand towel $5. Washcloth $3. and so on....just wonder how much of that is actually charged if taken????

PS - Because you get a key to the conceirege lounge with a JS we hardly ever saw this couple. It was a 5 night cruise and they never made it to the DR the whole cruise.

They spent their whole cruise on their balcony, casino or watching the World Series - drinking their smuggled booze and free drinks from the CL and eating room service and trays of food he carried down from the Windjammer.......Yikes - that was our last cruise with them..........

You don't get a key to the conceirge lounge unless you are diamond member or in a grand suite or above. If they were in a junior suite they apparently stole a key to the conceirge lounge also.

I honestly don't know what is happening to people...have some become viod of any moral or ethical judgement. I know that many do not see their own errors and are always pointing fingers and making judgements...but it seems that now a days, stealing, lieing, denying and such are normal, even with our public figuers like sports people and tv and movie people and of corse it's now only natural to expect politicians to lie! What has become of us? Why does the common thought seem to be what's in it for me...or what can I get? It is so sad...not funny, sad!

Granted. I remember reading how Bill Cllnton and his staff totally looted Air Force One as Clinton took his last official flight. Literally, anything with the Presidential seal was taken off including ash trays, pens, you name it. Apparently Clinton and his staffers laughed at the whole thing, pointing to how previous presidents had claimed "dibs" on everything and hauled it off.

Contrast that behavior with the story of how Abe Lincoln once worked at a country store and he mistakenly overcharged a customer for some bulk tea. Lincoln realized the error and walked several miles to the customer's home to repay the overcharge. He was simple & principled.

As a country we've become more enamoured of the people who find clever ways of bending the rules than of those who uphold simple moral imperatives. We've also become fans of a sort of moral relativism, wherein stealing soap is not as bad as stealing a soap dish which is not as bad as stealing an entire toilet.

A cruise ship is simply a cross section of society. Most cruisers would not take a towel, lamp or anything they did not bring with them. The fact that some cruisers giggle about their thefts, cite them as petty in comparison to greater thefts, or even brag about the loot they hauled off, only reminds us of the fact that some people simply don't get it.

Like some other posters here, I'd steer clear of any of my friends who boasted of their stolen goods. You used to be able to spot these people on ships by the patch over their eye, the parrot on their shoulder and the hook for arm, but sometimes they are suburban housewives or even grannies with reptile-shaped loaves of plaster under their arms ;)

I left all of our unused full size complimentary shampoo & conditioner behind .... we had our own favorites. I must be missing out!

If you don't want your unused complmenary bottles save them and give them to your local fire dept. I alway ask for extras and keep a bag full. When working an evacuation center or some ones house burns these bottles and small soap bars are wonderful. Homeless shelters love them also.

oh I totally forgot about this....On our last cruise there were two older couples that looked well dressed and kind of well to do. One night my DH and I went to the concierge lounge to grab a cappacino before going to the cigar lounge and the two woman that I metioned before were on there hands and knees rifling thru the mini fridge grabbing soda's and bottled water. We startled them when we came in but it didn't stop them. They in such a hurry that some of the cans of soda were rolling across the floor. What a sight. From then on the two small refridgerators were locked everynight once the concierge was closed. I'm guessing they really cleaned them out. It's sad when people take advantage of such a nice service like the concierge lounge

It's been almost 30 years since I worked in the hotel business, and theft of items was rampant back then. The logo items are not for you to take, not souvenirs and do cost the hotels. That they do nothing about it is just the way it is. It's no wonder the nail down everything in a hotel room, or it would be stripped on a regular basis. Even back then, if the room was stripped of the bedspread, towels and such, we would tack the charge onto their room account. Many would call to protest, we would tell them if they returned the items, the charges would be reversed.

I remember visiting fellow co-workers homes and seeing that they had furnished their places with hotel property, they saw nothing wrong with it. I suppose because I worked in the accounting department, I knew what everything cost.

I'm not one to pilfer from restaurants, but a funny thing happened to me a couple of years back. I wanted to take the sauce from my dish home, but the waitress was not acknowledging us any more, we were paid and leaving as far as she was concerned. So, I took the sauce in the little earthenware dish, fully expecting to return it on our next visit. The next time (perhaps two weeks later) we drove to the restaurant, me with the dish in my lap, upon arrival the restaurant had closed down. My kids, to this day, whenever I use the little dish, accuse me of forcing the closing of the restaurant because of my theft. I'll never get over the guilt.

There is a huge number of people on these boards who smuggle Booze onboard. I think this is dishonest and in violation of the rules. It seems these people don't see it in the same light as stealing a roll of TP or an aligator bread but it is.

I asked this question of Rccl direct and I was told that you can bring aboard wine as long as it is wine that RCCL does not serve. Plus this is a light hearted discussion on people taking items from the ship not a discussion on how dishonest it is to bring booze on a cruise. Most people who do bring it on also spend quite a bit of money thru out the cruise so I guarantee that RCCL is not hurting. So lets try to stick to the OP's subject.

The booze rule is to keep big drinkers from carrying on coolers full and not spending money on the ship....it is also not supposed to be out of the room.

I always carry a plastic bottle of already mixed margaritas. I only drink it on my balcony...often don't finish it and leave the rest for the cabin steward.

We bring alcohol as a convience for our room. I still by drinks by the pool and in the bars as well as wine with dinner.

Every item that is carried off from the ship has to be replaced.

Actually, a couple of years ago you DID get a concierge key with a Jr. Suite (there was a typo in the brochure, and the were forced to honor it).

My brother takes those little sauce cups all the time! He's built up quite a collection by now!

Since I'm tattling on my little brother, I should admit that I sometimes take a few Equal packets home with me from restaurants. Also, I have constantly dry skin on my hands (too many diaper changes!) so at hotels, I take the mini lotion bottle and put it in my purse. The room steward replaces the toiletries the next day, and I take the 2nd lotion bottle with me when I leave. (So I use one bottle at the hotel and I take the 2nd one home with me.)

I must admit, I do take the little pre-packaged toiletries and soaps from hotels and ships. I save them up for awhile and then take a box to a place here that is for teenagers who have no place else to go. It gives them an opportunity to have a shower and wash their hair. I don't see anything wrong with what I'm doing.

There's nothing wrong with taking the ones they put in your room if you don't use them, not that I see. Taking them from the maids cart...

I don't know if I would classify it as "stealing", but this past January on the Rhapsody we were packing our suitcases on the last night, and I noticed our 26 year old niece was packing one of the RCCL bathrobes into her suitcase. When I told her we would get charged if she took that, she said she had thought they were free. She put it back, but wasn't happy about it. Glad I saw it before she closed her suitcase up!

BB - another good post! :D

I have never even considered pilfering cruise ship stuff - it's not worth taking! RCI beach towels must be the worst in the industry. I can't even really imagine taking things from the luxury lines but I'll let you know when I get there ;) That HAL bathroom is sorta funny, sorta criminal! We need to see a pic.

In the Serenades first year, we cruised with a couple who took everything that was not nailed down!

All the usual items - Hot Choc Packs, sugar packs, TP, Pillow Mints, Towels, etc...

We noticed this and he said "they expect you to take these"...........

Unusual Items - They constantly called for Ice to make drinks with their smuggled boooze and kept all the buckets! They had a 3 foot long stack of them!

Robes - They stole their Robes!

They were given a FREE Upgrade from Balcony GTY to JS and they stole the Robes from the cabin!!!!!!!!!

You gotta wonder if they were not charged for any of those items, especially the towels.. They do keep track of them somehow.. I would not be surprised if in the end they ended up paying for what they thought they were stealing..

A couple years ago I caught a student stealing toilet paper from the high school where I teach. Thinking that he was up to no good and planned to "TP" someone's house, I confronted him. He broke down in tears and told me that he didn't have toilet paper at his house. I allowed him to take the stuff home.

I checked with the guidance office later to see if he was lying to me, and his counselor told me that this kid was indeed living in dire, dire poverty and his story probably was true.

Of course, that has nothing to do with cruisers taking everything off the ship, nor does it have anything to do with adults stealing from their employers. But I feel horrible for kids who grow up in these situations. I thought I grew up poor, but we always had toilet paper -- and we didn't have to steal it.

Wow, that is very sad. I think I would have also given him all the money in my pocket.. :( It would have broken my heart. I agree with you it is just too sad to see kids grow up in these situations!!
