Living In Halifax....

Recommended Posts

Michelle, the pier is located on Mariginal Rd in the south end of the city.I'll provide you with a link for some of the things to do in Halifax. There is quite abit to see along the boardwalk on the water front. As well as the Public Gardens(should still be open when you're here). There is the Kieths brewery tour, which is very interesting, and there is the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.

The Harbor Hopper should still be running as well which is a fun tour.

There are some maps located on the Where Halifax site and the Halifax info site.Hope this will help you. With 2 days here you should get to see a fair bit of the city's sights.

Please feel free to ask about any questions you might have.

The brewery is not far from the dock , maybe a 15 minute walk. The information kiosk at the dock can give you directions.

I can't speak for Saint John, but yes we have a casino in Halifax. It's located at the other end of the board walk. Here's a map of the Halifax water front.

Just about any route along the coast will give you some beautiful scenery,

as well the city its self has some amazing views.Which ones I would suggest,

the Peggys Cove loop and down towards Lunenburg along the old roads.

There is an information kiosk at the pier check with them regarding maps and possible other routes.

Sorry if this is alittle general, but it's hard to pick out the best routes as they all have something beautiful to see.

Rick and or Beach Bum (Beach bum in Ohio??)--Avis lists three rental offices in Halifax...Airport, Grafton Road and Kempt road. Is one of these at the pier? What about Enterprise or Hertz? do they an office near the pier and if so which street address? Thanks/

Seabee, we rented a car in Halifax from Hertz. They have a desk inside the terminal when you get off the ship. They drove us to the Casino Hotel location to pick up the car, but it is also close enough to walk. After we returned the car, we walked back and stopped at shops along the way and picked up some beer at Keith's.

We also will be going from the Waterfront to Fairview Cemetery, and I mapped it and it certainly is too far to walk, so we plan to grab a cab as suggested, but I dont want to pay for it to wait while we explore. I have never assumed Halifax was a city where you could hail cabs, so would we most likely have to take a card from the cab driver and have someone come back and get us or is there something around that area that would cause cabs to be there where we could just grab one?

Thanks!

There is a taxi stand near the Winsdor St. end of Connaught Ave.

Or you could just get a card from your driver and give them a call to pick you up.There is a large ford dealership just across the street from the cemetery and I'm sure they would call a taxi for you or have a phone you could use.

I think asking your driver to send someone back to get you after a certain amount of time, would be the best way. Since there may not be any taxis at the stand.

Hope this helps

Thanks, Rick. I am glad to see the rejuvenation of this post. I look forward to our return visit to Halifax, which will be within three weeks of today. I appreciate all the links -- there's always something new to do!

Rick, would you have information as to the better way to grab one of the shore excursions.. I do not want to rent a car just for the day we are there. I do think we would like Peggy's Cove and possibly the fishermens cove via the harbor queen, would you share some insight on the fishermans cove?

We are due in this Sept aboard the Grand Princess

Thanks

Jim

If you can do both Peggy's and Fishermans Cove go for it.

Feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

Enterprise has a kisok right at the pier, the best thing to do is contact them ahead of time. Here is a link.

http://www.enterprise.com/about/contactUs_CA.html

If you check page one of this thread near the bottom there is more car rental information.

Most companies will meet you at the pier.

Rick, I stumbled along this post today and think it's great that you are so helpful. I will be in Halifax and St. in 2 weeks and have done lots of research on both cities. It seems like such a great place and there seems to be A LOT to do. I am wondering if you had to pick what to see what would you choose. Maybe your top 5 favorite things and your ideal day of touring in your city. I can't wait to hear what you choose.

Thanks for your advice,

Carrie
