Living In Halifax....

Recommended Posts

My favorite place to eat, thats a really hard question. There are a ton of places along the waterfront with beauiful views and great food. It depends on what your in the mood for, as to which place to pick. I really couldn't single anyone out more than the others. But since I'm known for my links, guess what, here's another one.

Hope this isn't information overload for you, but there is really no bad place to eat downtown. Again my personal choice is along the boardwalk area, you can enjoy your meal and watch the world go by. If you have anymore questions ,please feel free to ask.

Thanks Rick1965,

Its a great link...I think we would probably want to do waterfront dining and eat lots of seafood. I think I narrowed it down to Salty's, Mother Tuckers, or Boondocks. Any of the three hold a particular fondness in your heart? :o)

Thanks for all your input!!!

I've been to 2 out of 3 of your choices, Mother Tuckers is very good. Salty's has really great food and a beautiful view. But I haven't tried Boondocks.

It would be hard to pick between the two I know, but Salty's would be a slight favorite because of the view. If you are going to Boondocks ,you will have to take a taxi. All the others are within easy walking distance of the cruise dock.

There are also some nice places in and around the casino on the waterfront.

Hope this helps

Hi,

Just adding my 2 cents ... not Mother Tucker's -- yeek. Boondocks is good (keep in mind it's in Dartmouth), but Salty's is the best choice. Also, near Salty's is an indoor market you need to walk through to get to Salty's. They've got good seafood there and it's cheaper than Salty's, and you can sit outside near the water. Great mussels and clams. And while you're in the area, I'd recommend Cows for ice cream or Beaver Tails for sinful pastry.

To Rick1965, love reading your comments/thoughts on Halifax. I grew up in Halifax but haven't lived there in about 10 yrs (don't ask me why I moved :( ). Reading about Halifax and all the great stuff it has to offer makes me feel good (and wanting to hop in my car for the quick 14 hr drive home).

Nice to see that some of the old standards are still going strong and that some of the newer places are getting rave reviews. I'm sure that everyone who visits Halifax has a great time and also appreciates your help. Too bad you don't give similar advice on some of the Caribbean ports.

Take care and hoist a Keith's for me.

I live just outside of Halifax --I had to defend Mother Tucker's. DH and I love it there!! We go a few times a year.

And yes, Halifax has a casino. It is on the waterfront, probably about a ten minute walk from where you will be docked.

Thank you for your post, it's nice to hear I'm doing a good job. I started this way back around my first cruise, when I was looking for information. I figured I'd try and help people enjoy our city during their stay. And as for that Keith's , consider it and many more hoisted.

ps as for advice on the Caribbean ports.........sent me down there for awhile and I'll see what I can do, lol .

Mother Tucker's is great, sorry if I gave you the wrong impression. I just feel Salty's has a better view of the waterfront. My wife and I also enjoy going to Mother Tucker's.

Hey Rick,

We're going to be up in your parts in mid August. We would like to go on a whale watching boat, Murphy's on the Water was recommended to us. Of course I'm wondering, why does RCCL do business with them but DON"T have a whale watching excursion. I've already read that some believe whale watching in Halifax isn't worth it, but, then again, when we were in Alaska, people complained of seeing nothing on the whale watching excursion that I thought was incredible beyond words.

Also, we'd also just like to get a flavor for the city, but not with a RCCL excursion, and nothing that would be boring for children (elementary school age).

Any thoughts?

Bonnie

Living in Halifax with Teenagers[ my children] One thing I will recommend is to take your teenager to horseback riding,it is a big hit with children and they can also play in the animal pen. The Discovery center in Halifax is another place I will recommend,it is a big hit with your people. Log on www.halifaxinfo.com and go from there.

If this is your first trip to Halifax, there's a ton of stuff todo all within walking distance of the ship. There are rental koisks at the dock.I would call the companies directly to make sure of avilablity.

Is it worth it? thats a personal call. Myself I don't think I'd rent a car, I'd sooner sit back and let someone else do the driving.

Rick1965

P.S That would be the right side of the road, although I've met a few who tried the other side with very limited success.

Rick,

I will be on the RCCL's Enchantment in July and they have an excursion about historical pub's in Halifax. We are wondering if there is a local place that would have something similar the the ships excursion.

With all I'm reading about Halifax, I wish we had an overnight there!

Thanks in advance for the help.

I thought that excursion sounded neat too. But we compromised on Peggys Cove. Maybe you could just follow the group from pub to pub and then decide if its worth paying for! ;) (I am just kidding...I know how people on these boards can be crucified for comments like that) Whatever you decide to do, have fun and maybe we will see you onboard!!!

Hi Rick,

We are Louisiana Cajuns going to Halifax for the first time. We'd love to discover our "roots." Do you have any suggestions for a tour we could do? The ship offers one, but we are traveling with my 83 year old mother and would prefer to travel in a small group.

Thanks!

Hi Cajuns, we're also going to Halifax for the first time. I thought I'd rent a car and go to Grand Pre. Isn't that where the Acadians were sent away - from the church there? We would also like to know where to go to discover your roots. We're not Cajun, but we admire the many Cajuns we've met. Our cruise includes Michael Doucet and Beausoleil! Can't wait.
