Living In Halifax....

Recommended Posts

After giving your question some thought, it would be hard to pick just 5, but here goes. Keep in mind my choices would not be everyones.

I'd start with an early morning walk on the waterfront, watch it slowly come to life.Than a trip up to the Public Gardens. A visit to the Citadel, for the view

of the city if nothing else.

Back down to the waterfront and hook a ride on the Harbour Hopper, than a tour of the Keiths brewery( free beer is always good).Finish the day with dinner on the boardwalk and an evening stroll.

Now keep in mind there's more than enough to do and see on the waterfront alone than on could see in a day. What you should see and not see is a personal thing. Some folks love museums, other want to see the everyday life of Halifax. I can't forget to mention Peggy's Cove, which is high the must see list. Each person who visits Halifax will see something different, and give you a different must not be missed list. I can tell you young or old there's something for everyone to enjoy.

That sounds like a wonderful day. I only wish we were there from sun up to sun down. We have reserved a car and are driving to Peggy's Cove ourselves. Then we're gonna head back and hit the Maritime Museum and the Public Gardens. We are gonna try and eat lunch too. Did I see you post something about Billy's? I can't remember if it's in Halifax or in St. John.

Anyway, thanks for your help. We'll let you know how it goes. Leaving on Sunday and we'll be there on Wednesday.

We are cruising on the Enchantment to New England/Canada at the end of September. I have not mastered this website yet, so forgive me for asking questions which may already have been answered. With the one day in Halifax -- and not booking excursions w/RCCL -- what would you recommend as the Not To Miss? We're not interested in hours in museums or shopping (unless jewelry is very reasonable). Thanks so much, Rick, for all the help it looks like you're giving.

Thank you for taking time to answer question. We will be coming to your homeland this Sept for the first time. I have book a tour though a company called Yourcab, have and you ever heard of them and if so is this a good choice.

You can walk to the casino in about15-20 minutes from peir 21, thats walking at a moderate pace. Here's a map of the water front. The ship docks at #41 and the casino is at #29. Just exit the cruise terminal and turn right following the boardwalk right to the casino.

Rick,

Any thoughts on the Bay of Fundy jet boat tours? My family and I are taking a cruise at the end of June and I heard the jet boats are lots of fun. We'll have two 15 yr old girsl with us. Any suggestions for teens?

I think the jet boats your talking about are in New Brunswick. I've heard they are a blast.I'll give you a link to them. I don't know if thats something you'd have time to take in from Halifax as it is quite a drive.

As for teens, thats a hard one to answer, everyone has a different idea of fun. But I'll give you a few links to check out and they may help you in making a choice.

The discovery center is fun for all ages, as is the Harbour Hopper. You can also spend a whole day just on the waterfront shopping and enjoying the views. The Public Gardens and Citadel Hill are both very nice to stroll around.

Of course I can't forget about Peggy's Cove, you can read more about these in the links of provide. Please have a look and feel free to ask about anything you want more info on and I will try and get it for you.

Rick,

Thansk so much for the info. What is the best souvenir to bring home from Halifax? Any stores you recommend that aren't too touristy? What is the weather normally like at the end of June? We're really looking forward to the cruise. Both cities look beautiful.

The best souvenir to bring home is one that reminds you of Halifax, some ideas might be Nova Scotia crystal which is hand blown on the waterfront.

Or some pewter which is sold on the waterfront.

There are lots of shops along the waterfront boardwalk which carry everything from the inexpensive small souvenirs to some very nice hand crafted items. Here are some more links to look over.

As for weather its usually quite nice, depending on where you're from you may find it a little chilly.(you will see the locals basking in the sun in june, after a long winter). Here's a link that may help, note the temperatures are in metric so I'll give you a conversion site.

The price for a taxi from the dock to Pegy's Cove is around $45-55 cdn. one way.So I'd say you'd be better off going with a pre-booked tour. You can do the bus tours or opt for a smaller group tour.

These are just a few. There are always taxis at the cruise dock willing to take you where ever you want to go, but always ask about the price before hand. The taxis are a very careful regulated at the dock so you shouldn't have any trouble.

Hi Rick.

We're headed your way....July 05.

Does the Black Cab London Taxi company have a good reputation?

They are offering a one hour tour of the city.

Also, ...the Titanic Museum...is in walking distance to the cruiseship pier?

What is the most cruiseships you have seen docked in Halifax?

Thanks, Rick.

The Black London Cab has a good reputation, I haven't heard anything bad about them.Their British Connection Tour looks quite good.

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is within walking distance of the dock.

It's around a 10-15 minute walk along the boardwalk to reach it.

As for the most ships docked at once, that would be 3.

any idea what a taxi would run to peggys cove. would it be better to have it wait or to call one from there? thanks!!

This is the latest taxi rates approved by the city for cabs picking up at the cruise ship pier in Halifax:

City Tours $30.00 per hour US, $42.00 per hour Canadian

Peggys Cove 3 hour tour $90.00 US, $125.00 Canadian

Peggys Cove And Halifax City 4 hour tour $110.00 US, $155.00 Canadian

These are the rates as of today and are posted at the cruise pier.

These prices are per vehicle and not per person and the taxis can accomodate four passengers comfortably. Most if not all the taxis allowed to pick up at the pier take Visa, Amex and Mastercard.

I hope this will help:

This Civic Holiday they are referring to is Natal Day, or the birthday of the city.

It is celebrated with a parade, various concerts and many other activities throughout the city. If you are here on this day expect lots of people in the downtown and waterfront areas since this is where most of the activities take place. If you are not planning any tours, walking is the best way to get around because traffic generally is at a standstill.

Hope this helps

Hi Rick,

We are Louisiana Cajuns going to Halifax for the first time. We'd love to discover our "roots." Do you have any suggestions for a tour we could do? The ship offers one, but we are traveling with my 83 year old mother and would prefer to travel in a small group.

Thanks!
