I agree the walkie talkies are annoying .

But it is not limited to the "great unwashed"

I take the train into NYC several times a month. The next time I am in the same car with some yuppie knothead going on and on in a loud voice into his cell phone about his big business deal

"WELL THEY OFFERED 1.9 BUT I AM HOLDING OUT FOR 2.2"

I will strangle him with his Ivy League tie.

Well, you guys could have saved me $40 bucks if I'd found this thread sooner! We're going on our first cruise in 3 weeks (Zenith to Bermuda) and since we've got 5 kids traveling (12 thru 20) I bought 2 sets of WT's, thinking we'd give 1 to the boys (17,19 & 20) and 1 to the girls (16 & 12).

I see now I've got to make a trip to the store and get my $40 back! I've got the post it notes and pens to replace them. :) I really like the idea of checking in on the even hour (I can't remember who posted it, but thanks!)

One question.......can you leave messages on a cabin phone? I couldn't find any info as to whether the cabins had voicemail, which is why I went with the WTs. But as a soon to be XSNOB (I hope I make the cut!) I promise to 86 the WT's tomorrow.

Good for you!! I don't care about the excuse, nobody needs walkie talkie's on a ship. When it comes down to it, it's really not that big. If I need to find Hubby in the afternoon, he's A: in the Cabin - doubtful, B: in a Bar or C: in the Casino - most likely. It's not rocket science.

Luckyroot:

The Celebrity ships I have been on had voicemail on the cabin phones. One nice feature was you could even check it from the housephones throughout the ship (instructions were on a sign near each phone.) So, if I called the cabin because I couldn't make it back in time and no one answered, I could easily see if my son had left a voicemail. :)

Thanks Dave, I now know we'll be able to stay in touch with the kids and respect the peace and quiet of our fellow pax.

18 days and counting, I can't wait!!

Now......any tips on seasickness?? Never been, so I don't know if I'll succumb, but I'm a big proponent of mind over matter and I do NOT intend to be sick on this long awaited trip!

One thing that helps me is fresh air. That's why we always have a balcony. If I can be outside, I don't mind the bumps as much.

You could try those pressure bracelets, or pop 1/2 a pill in the morning. The bracelet has worked ok, but I never noticed the pill doing much.

  1. Believe it or not, have something to eat -- even though it's the last thing you feel like doing. BTW that's eat, not overeat:D
  2. Get outside on deck (or balcony) and focus on the far horizon, not the waves close to the ship
  3. Ginger (ale, beer, root, candy, pills, powder) all help to calm the stomach).

All of the above have been successfully by three adult members of my immediate family. Enjoy your cruise:)

For those who don't know LIVTOJUMP is a Carnival fan. Nothing wrong with that but the style you prefer differs from what the style of most devoted X fans would prefer. Here's hoping you get a boat load of walkie-talkie users on your next Carnival cruise....

Yes, Livtojump is a Carnival fan as am I. What you also may not know about him is that is loves to joke around. You know, have fun, laugh a little. Maybe that's why we love Carnival. We had a thread a while back that was page after page about how Carnival doesn't offer Presidential butter anymore. 99% of it was just having fun. I can promise you this, almost everyone agrees with the walkie talkie thing, no matter what line you are sailing. By the way, I am a huge NASCAR fan, does that mean I can't sail with you?

Danno....what DebBrown said.....I was only kidding. I'm as anti walkie talkie as anyone one over here. I'll also jump on the "formal attire" threads as quickly as any of you would!

Can I still be part of the "club"? Even though I haven't sailed Celebrity yet, I'd sure like to do the "adults only".

Sorry...I must have missed the humour...might want to try one of these ;) , for those of us who need a bit of coaching, like me :D . If you hate walkie-talkies you're fine in my book, no matter what line you sail!!

With all this walki talkie crap I have to ad my gossip for today. If you watch AMERICAN CASINO, Tata died last night in his Henderson home, was found by his roommate this morning. So the show will be hiatus to remove him.

Rosie ODonnell wants to buy a cruise ship & be the boss for gay cruises. She plans to have adoption options aboard, marriages of lesbians & gay guys, and the usual fare. I think she'd be a perfect to buy Carnival.

Weezie Jefferson died this morning at 86. What a great actress she was with dear George Jefferson who's first acting job was the voice of Mr Ed!

And yet another Carnival slam. I am going to go out on a limb here and guess you are NOT one of the XSNOBS as they would never lower themselves to slamming another cruise line. Danno was on "our" boards the other day and I was quite impressed with his response to a thread regarding this club. Showed true class IMO. I have yet to sail Celebrity but I have decided that in my life, I will sail ALL of the lines. When it really comes down to it, your vacation is what YOU make of it, not those around you. I have yet to be disappointed on a cruise because I made my own fun. Trust me, you will find ill mannered people in Saks, Bloomingdales, Dillards, JCPenney's, Target and Walmart. You either let them affect you or you don't. As you can't control what they do, the choice is entirely up to you.

Danno - No need to apologize LOL. If you ever met me you wouldn't know that I was Liv on CC - not unless I told you. I didn't mean offense to any one.

Semper Fi old marine, my husband is one too. I lived with him at Cherry Point NC, the USMC air wing, many years ago.

BridgetteTom, You are right. A couple of opinions shouldn't keep us from returning to Royal Caribbean. We were always treated royally by them, and have cruised with them many times, but just not in the past 5 years. That opinion from the handicapped person really scared me for a minute there...I thought, My God, what has become of their pax?? It was probably an isolated incident like most others. We did find a few radicals on various lines. Hope to meet you on a future cruise. :o

When I need to be accounted for by my significatant other every minute of our cruise, I guess it is time to stay home. If I wanted to be on the end of a "wire" so someone else can pull my strings I can stay at work.

Let me lay by the pool unaccounted for, for just a couple hours each day. Let me not be subjected to someone elses "personal conversation" while they yell into their phone or walkie talkie.

If you need to "meet up" make arrangements ahead and just be "there" at the appointed time.

Come on cruisers, this is supposed to be relaxing - not checking in every moment. There are enough schedules on board. Try checking out for a while.

Well, I have to agree with another poster. I always know that I can find my husband in one of three places. The cabin isn't an option because that is where I just came from. He would be in the poolbar area talking to new friends, or in the casino. If I'm really late, he could be playing trivia. It never takes me more than 15 minutes to find him. Of course this is not counting having children on board and keeping track of them because we don't have any. When I traveled with my young daughter before they even had child care, I just took care of her myself the same as I did at home.

Sea-Cruise, Please don't hesitate booking RCL. Our cruise was fantastic and we tried to book the same cruise for next year but it's not available. We met very nice people thru CC, and had a wonderful cruise, and had very very good service for the most part. We would not hesitate to book RCL. I mentioned this earlier. The lunch buffet far surpassed Celebity. The dinners didn't come close to Celebrity. Either way, you will have a wonderful cruise on either line. Enjoy.

Hey all!

Just got back from a WONDERFUL cruise on the Infinity to Alaska out of Vancouver.....the most amazing vacation of my life

We had five children with us, 4 through 14....and one of the best parts was leaving all our cell phones at HOME! no nextel, no cell, no email, no nothing! I never saw the need to have a walkie talkie to keep us all in touch...notes and pre-arrainged times to meet worked perfectly and I didn't miss little electronic beeps at all.

As has been referenced multiple times in this thread however....I think we didn't need electronic 'leashes' because we are strict and raise our children to be respectful. I see nothing at all wrong with tugging one of my kids' ears and reminding them sternly that the other passengers (adults) worked hard to be on this cruise and deserve to spend their vacations the way they wish, in peace and quiet....and if my child (or children) had behaved in a way that I felt would infringe on that they would have been quickly removed to the cabin without any arguement or conversation.

Period.
