Especially loved the one of you in your tux (very handsome!) singing in the Golden Lion pub. Loved your shots of the SOL...especially the one when we were leaving in the storm!

Have a great evening...I'll be back tomorrow.

So glad you had such a wonderful cruise. Thanks to everyone who has posted remarks and pictures. It is almost as good as being there!! Well, not quite!!!

Penny, I agree with you. Cunard really missed a wonderful opportunity to do something special for this great group of cruisers. Cunard does so many things so well, but at times they really don't seem to get it!! Just a few small gestures for your party would have all of you singing their praises.

Do any of you know how long Captain Warner will be on the ship? Would love to sail with him in late September. Who was the cruise hostess?

Maria, so sorry to hear about your uncle. My deepest sympathy to you and your family - especially your father.

I hope this thread continues for a long time. What a great group of cruisers. Do let us know about the reunion cruise. We may all want to join this fun group.

I am enjoying reading the camaraderie of this trip, and was jealous that you guys were in Halifax over the weekend. I have not been there since 1991, and enjoyed the city a lot then - in fact it is one of my favorite cities. Did many of you get to the Maritime Museum and see the large piece of paneling from the First Class Lounge, a piece of railing from the Grand Staircase, and the steamer chair recovered from the Titanic's wreck site? It is a shame it was raining in Halifax, but it looks like everyone had a great time. I am impressed with how many CCers showed up at the Commodore Club. Most times, you will be lucky to see one or two! Keep the observations coming about your trip.

So glad to see that everyone enjoyed themselves on the Labour/Labor Day cruise. Thanks for the pictures Sid. We now have the advantage of knowing what Maria and Karie look like so I guess some day those of us not on that cruise will have to return the favour.

Sorry to hear about your uncle Maria but it sounds like you pulled off the gathering fairly well and made some lemonade out of what life has thrown at you lately. You go girl!

Never been to Halifax and was considering this cruise way back in January but opted for the longer Dec 2 Caribbean sailing. Sad to hear it rained but it sounds like everyone took it as it came and didn't let the weather destroy the wonderful get together and sailing.

Yes, Penny, I too watched the Halifax webcam and watched the ship in port. Had to see what it looked like in my own country. If the December 2 sailing is anywhere as successful we'll be okay.

Here's hoping a safe return to everyone and enjoy the rest of the year with your wonderful memories.

Finally figured out your "Friends of Henry", but isn't his name Oscar? BTW, they don't have Henry or Oscar on the ship. Just the plain old garden variety faceless one!

<LOL>

Still lots of pages in the book. Marc and I had intended to run in last night and post the picture in the log book of the group, but the library was closed. We may send it to someone who will be on a future cruise!

All! Don't forget in all the fun and frivolity to post to the log book! Ask the librarian/bookstore clerk! She keeps it behind the desk!

Karie,

Who could have bought more stuff in the bookstore.... And shouldn't!

Not sure who you mean by "hostess" am assuming you are talking about who replaced Amanda Reid? (What's that you say? Amanda is not there as Social Hostess any more? <gasp>)

Yep. Found out Amanda is now ACD- Assistant Cruise Director! I think it is a promotion for her.

While we are on the subject, Steve from Manchester of Golden Lion Pub fame is now on the entertainment staff. He recognized us! (Before we saw him, even!) Tried to pry the pub trivia answers out of him. I think it was 2-B, 14- K and 4-D Or something like that. But he didn't say which quiz! Paul of the famous Banana Dolphin talent at the Commodore was on holiday for two weeks, so we missed him. We opined that he ought to take a helicopter out and at least meet us in Halifax and cancel his holiday! I can't remember where he is posted now, but he, too, got what is billed as a promotion.

As for the sad lady who always sat alone in the Commodore, reading, and had been on the ship for some time, she is now off the ship. So the story goes, she lost her very, very beloved boyfriend in the Twin Towers. She had money, and this was how she dealt with her sadness. Staff felt it was a positive thing that she finallly got off the ship and get back to reality. She has really haunted me over these months. I have known harsh times in my distant past, and my heart goes out to any who have dealt with such personal angst. I've been there. There were some lost years in my life, because of having to put my life back together many, many years ago. I don't wish that on anyone, and my heart goes out to those who suffer. My fervent wish for her is that she find herself, and her meaning again, and start embracing life again. Don't know if the preceeding story is the truth, but if she ever joins these boards, she is welcome to contact me. My caring is real, no matter what the story.

So that is where everyone is!

Oh, one more! Zoltan our January waiter, is bringing his fiancee on board to work at the gift shops! He, too, saw us and recognized us! (Gee, Am I that obnoxious that everyone remembers me?<LOL> Joanne, don't let John answer that question <G>!!!)

Beth, I fully expect to live through you all on the Dec 2 Cruise. In my heart of hearts I really want to join you, and Penny and David and so many others here so badly, but know that it is not to be. I fully expect you to surpass our 92 cruisers, and 55 at the party. You need to start now emailing the right people (Guest relations) to make them recognize and schedule the group. And convince them that it is to their benefit to work with us and support us. Other lines sponsor these things, knowing that we talk, and that people check the opinions on these boards when deciding to book a particular cruise or line. I won't say we can make or break a cruise, but we can certainly affect peoples' decisions to book. Businesses spend tons of money to advertsie to affect people's buying decisions and such,. How much would working on us with scheduling cost them- They make (highway robbery) $27.50 for a 5X7 photo surrounded by stock footage to mmake it an 8X10 (They no longer make ANY smaller photos) . And then want to charge us 85 bucks an hour for a phtographer they were going to make money off of. I'm surprised they didn't want to charge us for the bartenders.

Karie,

who is looking forward to living vicariously through the Dec 2 cruiser.

P.S. Those diabolical fiends. I get home and what is in the mail while we were gone? Special prices on Mediterranaean cruises for 07!

Hi All, Karie and Maria,

I know that Maria may not be on this board too often in the coming days and it is understandable under the circumstances of her health and families loss.

Maria, you have Bev's & my deepest sympathy with your most recent loss of your uncle. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Sid, very very good pictures. I especially like the Sunrise in Halifax. Some of them are prize winning shots. I'm especially am fond of Sunrise & Sunsets.

I am so happy that the cruise went so well considering a past tropical storm was at your back for awhile. It was so interesting to read the different accounts especially about the Dining Room with the Decon Team. Lucky we didn't experience that in July during our cruise. It is scarey when you don't expect such a bizarre occurrence during Dinner Time.

Congrat's on the overwhelming number of people gathering together at the meet. Ours in July, also a short trip, was about 62+ Roll Call but 15 showed. I am sorry that Cunard did not take such a gathering seriously. I hope they change their thoughts with such serious and experienced cruisers.

She is a beautiful ship! I saw her in today while on the Parkway going to a Doctor Appt. Since we live like Maria in Brooklyn, we opted to take car service instead of parking in the lot for our cruise. We also agree about the Brooklyn Terminal ease. We will be going to Manhattan in October and not happy after using Brooklyn.

I do agree it is easy to do to some of the laundry before getting off and clean clothes to put away at home. Easier unpacking. Also during that time (at home) it is only human to have a separation factor to replay your time on the ship at home. "Oh, at this time I would be going to Tea". Ordering a pizza for 6:30PM instead of seating in the Brit Dining room. We always play that out. Also at this time we reflect on the staff so dedicated to us all those days.

Yes we liked the food onboard during our July cruise. I do agree about Maria trying to find something to eat in the late evening at the Kings Court being difficult if you are under the weather. I was amazed at some of the selections at 11:30PM being offered. I have GERT - Reflux and was very careful what and what NOT to touch. Poor, Poor Maria. Frozen Yogurt does Rule and all liked it.

Johnsy81, I do hope you enjoyed your room so high onboard. We were in a Deck 11 Room and are ready to book such a room again. Quiet and very nice and away from the busy decks below.

Well, again, Welcome back.........

Regards,

:) ESLO

(Ed & Bev)

Yes, Karie, the Amanda Reid position is that one about which I was inquiring. She is delightful and will make an excellent assistant cruise director. In fact, she has been on ships so long, I'll bet she will be a cruise director before long. She started as a dancer in the production shows and then was a much loved social hostess on Celebrity until Celebrity decided to do away with that position. Cunard was lucky to get her to join their staff. Was Amanda on your cruise?

What about Captain Warner? Do you know anything about his schedule?

Thanks!

Beth

Wonderful city. Wonderful people. Yes, I will post my pictures (if they are viewable at all) of the steamchair, the piece of railing and the archway piece. Plus a full bathroom chest owned by one of the men on the rescue ship and handed down through his family until they donated it to the museum. Presumably authentic, including the carpenter's mark which was a carpenter who worked on the the ship's furnishings. Very fine workmanship.

The chair is actually a replica, created from a piece they recovered. They let people sit on this chair- so it isn't the real one. But they do have a real one.

Now I have to tell you about Fred, and Melvin!

FRED is a free bus paid for by the downtown business association. It runs a loop to the museum, casino, shopping area and citadel every forty minutes. This is the Green bus, named "Fred"! The driver this holiday (He usually does the college kids) is named Melvin. Melvin is one of the finest ambassadors Halifax has, though he doesn't think of himself that way. He is personable and friendly, and tells tales of Halifax to passengers. He is quoted in a book about Hurricane Juan, which devastated the area in, I think 2004, or maybe that was the blizzard. The other was 2001, I think. He keeps these books in his backpack and passed them around to passengers sometimes. These are his personal possessions! Just a great guy! I have a picture of him and one Marc took of him and me.

The museum- we spent hours there, and still could have stayed longer (but barely got back to the ship in time, but made it thanks to Melvin!) Fabulous ship models. And some great Cunard Stuff. Plus the stuff (Sid posted pictures) of the horrendous devastating 1917 fire and explosion (And heroic acts) in Halifax.

It didn't actually rain the entire time we were there. Early in the day was horrendous. I brought an umbrella, but it was very windy. Unfortuantely, I did not take my jacket and wore shorts. (Couldn't wear <GASP!> JEANS, after all. This was the CUNARD QM2!!!!! ) when we came back, the rain had stopped, and indeed, the sun came out. Marc also got shots of both sunrise in Halifax (it was clear in low strips along the horizon just before and after sunrise, making for some beautiful shots) and also the sun coming out as we left. (Figures!)

Karie,

who would gladly go back to Halifax

P.S. Thought about wearing jeans the last night- Just as a statement! <EG>

Hey Maria- It's your story. When are you going to post about Daniel and Marie Jose?

It's a wonderful story, folks!

I'm the devastatingly skinny waif-like thing in some of the pictures. <LOL>

I am the one presenting the T-shirt (Which says, "Well, La-de-fricking-da" on it) to Maria. When I saw this in a catalog, I thought, This is the perfect birthday gift for Maria. Even Marc agreed it is so her!

Gotta run off to work. Reality calls... <sigh>

who is deeply disturbed at no eggs benedict this morning... And no Commodore club last night.

Eslo, we actually enjoyed being on deck 12 but sometimes found it to be "out of the way" (it seemed like we were always waiting for an elevator). Very quiet though. We did experience some noise overhead during the very early morning hours...a bit of banging and some dragging sounds.

Just read a review from someone who was on NCL Dawn (we saw the ship on Saturday docked in Manhattan as we drove past) and the person wrote that there were 20 foot seas on Saturday...glad I didn't know that. Captain Warner came on to give us a report from the bridge each day but I had difficulty hearing him...noise around me plus his speech pattern made for difficulty hearing him. I know we had strong winds across the bow and that the outside decks were closed off Saturday night and Sunday morning.

I agree that QM2 is a beauty...you really don't appreciate her until you are on land looking at her. We had company going into Halifax - HAL Maasdam out of Boston. She proceeded us out of Halifax harbor and was continuing north to the St Lawrence seaway...hope they had decent weather.

No it's not a new boxing match or something

I keep wondering why everyone keeps saying this rough seas and bad weather was from Ernesto.

According to what the NOAA and NHC were saying when we left land, Ernesto was predicted to shoot up into the Great Lakes area, and what was pushing it there was winds out of the Northeast and East, what we in New England refer to as a Nor'easter, and what, if I am not mistaken (I didn't read the book) happened in "The Perfect Storm" They are generally considered to be among the more destructive storms up here. Now admittedly, I did not look at NHC or NOAA charts after getting on board, and Ernesto may have headed back Eastward and affected our weather and seas, but I used to teach a rather limited course in weather (including how to read various types of weather charts), grew up in Florida where every grade school child knew how to plot hurricanes on the charts given out by drug stores, grocery stores, and banks, and consider myself fairly knowledgeable about weather patterns. Yeah, it's mostly a matter of personal pride (okay, call it what it is, ego!) and I, like the weather bureau, have been wrong before! <G> but did Ernesto veer off to the northwest as predicted? Or did it go back out to sea, and affect our trip?

Hey! We had rough seas and high winds and waves regardless of the source. that I don't dispute! I just sometimes get obsessed about stupid things!

Thanks

Karie,

the WX lady!

Oh! That must've been the "missing passenger" they kept calling to the pursers office on the PA system. <EG>

Sure hope the one they kept paging as we left Halifax made it back on board!

Oh, and as Marc and I were boarding in Brooklyn (late) the escalator up was shut down, A gentleman was lying at the bottom, being attended by terminal employees. He was lying down, and seemed in distress or possibly even unconscious. With all of the hustle bustle, I forgot to enquire after his well being. It did worry me, and I hope the gentleman was okay. What a horrible thought, to have a bad fall, or heart attack at the start of your trip. He was a somewhat large man, and simply could have been overcome by the heat of the crowds in the terminal at the time. I know I was, shuffling along in the crowd and carrying heavy carry-on items and hot jacket.

Did anyone happen to hear about this and know if he was okay, or hear of a passenger who did not make it aboard due to an incident in the terminal?

My thoughts were with him, a few times, and I (sadly, selfishly) neglected to ask anyone.

Karie,

who was saddened by his apparent misfortune. Staff seemed to have things under control, and though I wished I could rush to his aid, or help, or at least give solace and hand holding, knew I would have nothing to contribute and would only be in the way. My heart went out to him.

Good question. I'm trying to talk her, and Marc, and myself into going with you guys on the Dec 2nd. She and Johnsy81 are already planning the Memorial Day to Bermuda or Bahamas or one of those other B places.

Hmm., Dragging? The Queen?

DAVID! Are you calling Maria a Drag queen?

hmm I think we need to make up a stage nme for her. Diva is already taken, as is Madonna. Earth Goddess is NOT her.

Catching up on a little reading from when we were gone.

I glanced at this past Sunday's Horoscope -When we were in our CC Meet and Mingle- (For me, AND Maria- We are both Leos.)

"Make a splash as the most entertaining party person this weekend. Don't start anything of importance early this week!"

<G>

Karie, who is thinking:

Wow! Maybe these things really ARE true!<G>

Hi Everyone, :)

Sorry I have not been on these threads lately, but my butt has been draging (no pun intended).

To all those folks who have expressed their thanks. You are quite welcome. It was truly my pleasure to arrange the Meet and Greet and I am glad it turned out to be such a success. But the success was actually due to all the ccers who attended.

Also, my thanks for your messages of condolence on the passing of my Uncle. My Dad is taking this loss very hard and I am spending as much time with him as possible.

Now I would like to give a quick daily review of the cruise. Remember these are only my impressions and opinions.

Day 1 - Embarkation

Arrived at the Red Hook pier at 12:20pm. Checked my rolling suitcase at the curb and went to the parking area. Asked for the handicapped parking and was told to go straight ahead. All handicapped spaces were already taken, but there were other spaces available, so just parked and lugged my 30 pound tote bag to the terminal in the heavy drizzle. Once in the terminal, I breezed through security and joined the snaking line waiting for the picture IDs. The line moved quickly and I made friends with the people behind me. We were laughing and joking and a couple on the line going the other way in front of us asked if I was Maria from cruise critics. I said yes and low and behold it was Betsy and David the cruisers from North Carolina. Then another gentleman stopped me to admire my coat. It is Fushia with gold braid. The gentleman's name is Mark and he specializes in millinery design. Mark handed me his business card and said he would make me a hat to go with my coat. (More on this later).

When I got to the bank of windows for my ID key card, my clerk was a very attractive, black bald man. I said "I like your hair cut" he said "I like yours too" (remember, my hair is just starting to grow back). My friends from the line were at the next window and were laughing and asked if we were related (the clerk and I). I answered "Yes, but we were separated at birth". The best part was the light above me was reflecting off my nearly bald head and they had to re direct it so they could take my picture.

All and All a very quick moving line with enjoyable company and lots of laughs. A good beginning, and to me a good omen of things to come.

Was in my cabin at 1:15pm and unpacked by 1:30pm. Met my cabin steward Kenneth and found a letter on the floor from Cunard.

Day 1 - The rest of the day.

The letter from Cunard started "Dear Mrs. P----". (Bad sign #1 as I was booked as Ms.) "Welcome onboard Queen Mary 2 for this Westbound Transatlantic" (bad sign #2 as this was a 4 day cruise to Halifax, Nova Scotia). The letter went on instruct me to go to the Purser's Office to confirm the arrangements for our group. It also offered the group help on disembarkation day (bad sign #3 because we all booked separately).

The letter was signed by Inka Schultz, Hotel Manager's PA.

Went directly to the Purser's desk on deck 2. Inka was not available. Spoke with Ingrid. (bad sign #4) Had to give Ingrid all the details I had already given to Sarah Hegoas as no one had a copy of my original fax but me. Ingrid was to pass the information on to Inka and Inka would call me. (Glad I did not hold my breath waiting)

Back to the cabin and called Karie. Her cabin is changed. Went to Pam's (Tvl Beach) cabin (she was only a few cabins down from mine but was out making spa appointments). Went to King's Court. Totally too crowded. Back to cabin. Called Jack and Brent (recently signed on as Cornus) who were also on deck 8. They came to my cabin for a pre sail toast, as did Pam and Sid (Smeyer418). We all visited for a little while and everyone went back to their cabins to get ready for the life boat drill.

The life boat drill leaves a lot to be desired. There is no real organization and certainly not enough room for people from several decks to either stand or sit in the King's Court. I found Pam and her husband Eddie and sat with them through the sometimes unintelligible instructions coming from the loud speakers. It was over in about 15 to 20 minutes.

Back to the cabin to have another cocktail. Needed It!

Karie called and told me her new cabin number and about her accident at home. She and Marc came to my cabin, and we had a wonderful reunion. In case you are unaware, I met Karie and Marc on the January Panama Canal cruise. (And no Karie, you did not meet Jack and Brent back then.)

Off they went to there cabin and we made arrangements to meet at the Commodore Club for pre dinner cocktails.

The Commodore Club is a lovely cocktail lounge and the drinks were superb. Met the Manager. Tracey, and discussed the Meet and Greet.

Off to second seating dinner and to meet Johnsy81, Jo and John. Two more kindred spirits!. The story of the yellow tape and the man in the Hazmet suit and the Carol Burnett look alike lady with the bucket has already been told, so I will refrain from telling it again.

We lingered at the dinner table a long time and when we finally left, Karie, Marc and I headed back to the Commodore Club. Jo and John headed off to their cabin. (I personally think they were doing the second honeymoon thing.;) )

We met David (Desirod) and a few other cc folks and had a fabulous time.

Back to the cabin for the night and a sound sleep.
