Port Security....Deathly afraid of dogs.

As a HUGE dog lover...I can tell you that they DO NOT let you near the dogs.

After a Panama Canal cruise on the Jubilee, we were awakened at 6am by someone banging on the door. Two armed customs agents barged into our room with a dog who made a quick round of the cabin and then marched out, and hit the cabin next door.

That IS a true story and let me tell ya...it freaked me out!

We had been to Columbia and I wondered at first...maybe there was more than coffee in in those bags I bought???

We had a dog "inspect" the trunk of our car when we sailed out of NYC on Victory on 8/31, before DH could park the car. Since our checked bags were already gone and we were all asked to step out of the car, I assume they were looking for explosives. Beautiful black lab - on a fairly short leash. In our case, it would have been very easy for a person who has a fear of dogs to exit the car and enter the boarding area without being near the dog.

I have seen dogs twice last week when we returned from the Holiday but they were already in cages in the pick-up area of the parking garage and then in Jan on the Conquest a guide dog for a blind passenger the passenger was being escorted by a crew member. Here's a really dumb question but where does the dog relieve it self while on board. The reason I ask is because we were on the Promenade and while they were walking this poor dog was poo pooing in front of the casino while it was walking and quess what someone came walking behind them and, well I guess they had to go change their shoes, I really was quite curious because I didn't see any grassy areas on the Conquest. Surely they make some kind of provisions for this. Any body know?

Can anyone tell me about security dogs at the ports. I am traveling with someone who is deathly afraid of dogs and was wondering if anyone could tell me if they get near the passengers while you are boarding? I just want to be able to prepare her incase they do.

I would make sure that your TA (or PVP) is aware of this problem, so they can make Carnival aware. While Customs ~not Carnival~ does control the embarkation (and debarkation) perhaps if the ticketing agent is aware...they can provide some assistance. We have had some ports where we did not see anything and others (like New Orleans) where they were up close.

It may not even hurt to contact the Port and ask. I know to take this seriously because our son has AS and gets panic attacks around mascots (and plastic sharks...go figure???) It is a real disorder that can have severe consequences if nto handled properly. Good luck!

Whoa....is right!! If anyone saw me at 6am, it would have been the dogs running for cover.

I did notice that a group of policemen at the Costa Maya pier had a dog with them. But, they were not on the pier the entire time and the dog was not interacting with passengers. I don't know if their appearance on the pier is typical or not.

That poor guide dog:( It may have been having an adverse reaction to a first cruise or something because a service dog is trained to "go" on command and never at any other time. I often travel with my service dog, including cruises. She has been on 5 1 Carnival, 1 NCL, and 3 RCCL with number six due very soon. My dog is only 10 pounds and is tained to a litter box like a cat and we just keep in in our cabin, however a larger dog is provided a box of sand or sod on one of the outside decks that has very little traffic. I have always been asked if I needed this to be provided for me with the first call to the special needs office. I can't imagine that Carnival would have neglected to do this and would be more likely to belived that the dog had some form of seasickness. My vet provided me with special meds for my dog just in case.

There was a widely publicised event, on a Carnival cruise out of Jacksonville I think (too lazy to research the details) where the theme of the cruise was some sort of rock band fest, and people had been online talking about what they were planning to light up.

The Sherrif responded with dogs, and just after the embarkation photo, passengers turned a corner and just before boarding they were given an embarkation sniff-er-roo from the K9 narcotics unit.

They caught about a dozen guys and gals, mostly for pot, and all were displayed in orange jumpsuits in the jail photos. It was said that word got back to the boarding line about what was ahead and a lot of trash cans started filling up!

I fell like that was a weird question but it just really struck me how do they take care of these dogs, it was really sad to see (for the dog) I know they can be trained to do just about anything but it must have been very foreign to this animal. I appreciate your answer.

One has to assume that to have a horrible fear of dogs an incident happened to that person involving a dog. Does your friend do therapy for this fear? I was thinking it might be a good idea to go to your local police station and ask about meeting the k-9 unit and ask questions. These dogs are highly trained and do not attack people. Maybe your friend could even visit with the dog. I have a German Shepherd and she is the old world style that is HUGE!! Much bigger than the ones you mostly see here in the states. Because of her size, I know alot of people are afraid of her so when I take her out in public, I use a leash and keep her out of the crowds. She is trained and a gentle thing, but some are not convinced due to the size. I understand this so I try to keep this in mind when around people. I hope yall have a great cruise and see no dogs.:)

In St. Maarten, there were two or three "working" dogs on the pier to board the ship. I only mention this because the pier is not especially wide, and I would say we were about 15 feet away from them when we boarded. Like the others above said, they were just smelling as you went by, you won't have anything to worry about if you have nothing for them to worry about. ;)

They were such beautiful dogs (we have shepherds too) that I took pictures of them. I will email them so you understand the distance if you would like me to.

Too bad your friend is so afraid of dogs. I love our dogs to death, I couldn't imagine my life without our "fuzzy four legged poop machines" as we lovelingly have nicknamed them. :D

Beth . . . I had to laugh at your "fuzzy four legged poop machine" . . . that fits my little Westie to a tee!!!! :D

I've been on six cruises . . . in fact, I just returned from my cruise to the Western Caribbean (including Jamaica) on Saturday. I've never seen a dog . . . drug sniffing or pets. Hum, never thought about that before . . . where were all the puppies on those islands? However, in Cozumel, I saw guys with guns (as we were showing our IDs to go back to the ship) . . . that scared me more than any puppy dog would . . . :(
