Day before cruise sites Los angeles to Long Beach

Coming in the day before the cruise we will arrive at 11:00 am at LAX. Since we will have a rental car with unlimited millage, What can anyone reccomend to see or do in the area??????:confused:

 

Our Hotel is in Artesia, CA. I know it is out of the way, but at .95 per room I could not pass it up!!!

 

Please keep in mind for us this cruise is to celebrate Grandma turning 100 years old SO skydiving, cliff jumping and rollercoasters are out of the question.

A. Congrats on your Grandmother turning 100. My Mom passed away last month just one week short of turning 97.

 

B. We rented a car after our Pride cruise (since we did not fly out until the next morning). Fortunately, hubby has go fly out to the west coast pretty regularly .... so he knew how to show us Rodeo Drive and Beverly Hills. We had lunch that the Cheesecake Factory at The Grove. It was a great (but not to stressful) day!!

Oh my...where to start? There are a gadzillion things to do and see around L.A.! My DD lives there, and I go visit about twice a year. Always do and see different things every trip.

 

I think a little ride down Rodeo Drive in B'Hills would be a great thing to do, as well as around Santa Monica and Malibu. Drive up into Hollywood Hills, if you have time. The houses are gorgeous. There are so many fantastic restaurants on the beach in Malibu. I'm particularly fond of going to Gladstones and Paradise Cove. I love going to the Promenade in Santa Monica, always interesting things going on and sights and people to see. The Santa Monica Pier is fun to go to, as well.

 

Just taking a scenic drive down and past Malibu will amaze you. There's nothing on earth like the beauty of the Pacific, the shoreline, cliffs, ahhh, I could go on and on....but you'll have to see it to believe how gorgeous it is.

 

Just be really cautious on the freeways. Lordy, those folks don't know how to drive under 80 (!) in the 6-8 lanes of traffic....watch for your street exits. As many times as I've been there, I let DD do all the driving. Have fun exploring!:)

Pickpart2, don't hassle yourself driving around L.A. Your nerves will be shot before you sail. Just head out toward your hotel and find something interesting along the way. Some of the suggestions you'll hear would take a week to complete, unless you are a masochist. If you want to frazzle your nerves, do it after a cruise sometime. (Can't wait to read the responses to this!) ;)

auh now....it wasn't that bad. Well, perhaps because I had someone behind the wheel who knew his way around. It was a good thing though that he was "experienced", since they were having some marathon that ran all the way across LA. All of his side road short cuts we turned on was blocked for the marathon.

You're not very far from Disneyland, and with a wheelchair Disneyland is very accessible. You also could drive along the coast to Newport Beach -- very artsy and some nice scenery.

I would suggest a drive down Pacific Coast Highway.

You could drive to Long Beach or Seal Beach from Artesia (710 or 605 FWY)

Just head on down the coast (PCH). Not too bad for trafic and there is a lot to see.

 

Disneyland is fun but may be a bit tiring.

I live in LA & yes, the freeways can be brutal if you're not used to them. Disneyland would be a good option for your hotel location ( though I would search around - I bet you could find something cheaper in Long Beach through Hotwire, Priceline, etc.

Beverly Hills & it's Rodeo Dr. would be a great way to see sights & not spend $ (unless you go into the stores). There are some reasonable places to have lunch(original Cheesecake Factory on Beverly, original Cal Pizza Kitchen also on South Beverly) & even a drink at the Polo Lounge in the Beverly Hills Hotel - OK, more expensive for that. Then you can drive along the streets looking at all the mansions. There is also Farmer's Market next to The Grove Shopping Center. The Grove is just a normal mall, really, but Farmer's Mkt is a cute landmark. Just a couple of blocks from there is El Coyote - a Cheap Mexican place that is a hangout for Hollywood types (Sharon Tate had her last meal there). All of these sights are less than 10 miles from each other, so no freeway driving except to get there.

What would the Centurian like to do...? Disneyland can be a lot of fun... even if you don't go on rides... lot's of live music... maybe lunch or dinner at the Blue Bioux... Or maybe a watertaxi at Long Beach from the Queen Mary to shoreline for lunch or dinner...

I should have made it more clear that I am the Great Grandson taking 4 seniors personally to LAX. The rest of our cruise Group is coming from around the world so they will be flying in on different times.

 

Since I am younger with GPS don't have an issue with driving anywhere. Personally I work in Chicago so dealing with traffic is a daily thing.

 

I have thought of Knotts berry farm and Disney, but wonder if it would be worth it to go and pay $$ for about 8 hours by the time we get their. I also would not want to tire them out even though I rented scooters for the trip.

Great! Take advantage (sounds like you are) and appreciate any grandparents and parents especially, as long as you have them!

Love it! I am a "Great Grandson" as well, and in addition to knowing Chicago (and Indiana) area very well due to work; I'm born and raised in LA, so can definitely tell you what my "Chicago Family" liked to do in LA...

And you should be fine driving, if you've driven around downtown Chicago, "The Loop", "The Coast", and especially the "Toll Roads", you will have no problem in LA...;)

Ahah! It really depends on their personalities, and what they like to do...

There are SO many things to do in LA...

are they super into Disney? Knott's Berry Farm is cool for a lot of different reasons (it is actually the first amusement park in the world), but in scooters do they want to do that? Is it really a major important thing for them? (If so, then absolutely yes, they can do it - if not, then what else are they really interested in? There are SO many other things to do!)

Especially to a Chicago guy (who is used to driving in Chicago traffic) from an LA guy (who knows Chicago really well), you should be totally fine and comfortable driving around here in LA...

The BIG question for me at this point is...

What kinds of things and activities do you think you and your grandmother are interested in seeing and doing in LA?

Literally in Los Angeles, you can just give me a subject, and something great exists here for that interest...

I looked into Knotts and they are only open until 5:30

$39.95 is alot of money for only 4 hours in the park by the time we get their. Disney is not totally out, but at $65.00 it is a place we have all

been too at one time or another.

 

With the age group I am escorting to LA and the different times eveyone else if flying in I got the feeling we will only see the sights.

Rodeo drive, hollywood hills, dana point.................

Any other Must see things????????????
