What is the best way to get cash on board?

Do I have to bring travelers checks or can I just cash a check at the pursers desk? In the past we had used our sail & sign card to get cash in the casino but last year they began charging for this. I remember an ATM on board, but that also charged a fee. I just don't want to pay to get my own money. I know I will need cash for use in the ports.

I bring travelers checks with me and cash them at the purser's desk. There are ATM's onboard, but they may not always work and they have fees.

If you are not wanting to be charged a fee of some sorts then I would suggest bringing travelers checks with you to cash at the pursers desk.

The BEST way to GET CASH ON BOARD, is to just bring it with you... I usually bring several hundred $ for ports, tips, and CASINO... If you have some left over, then on the last night pay off your Sail&Sign account... I have (knock on wood) never been robbed or lost any cash.. and I prefer the WAD of $ to any alternative... but I suppose if this causes you concern, then bring the travelers checks...

I don't think they'll cash ANY personal checks onboard! The ATM machines charge a hefty fee, and usually run out of cash early on...which is not replaced. You can get a cash advance on a credit card, but not on a bank/debit card. I bring Traveller's Checks, and cash them at the Casino to get small bills. I also bring cold, hard cash in small denominations, and keep it locked in my cabin safe.

We bring cash and leave most of it in the safe. When in port, we take credit cards and a limited amount of cash. We also notify our credit card companies (one or two only) that we will be out of the country so as not to have our accounts frozen for any charges made which might look unusual.

The Pursers office will cash one personal check as long as its backed by a credit card. Bring your own cash/travelers checks.

Best way to get cash on board is win it in the casino.

 

Or travelers checks cashed at Purser or the casino

Or personal check at the Purser.

Or charge to S&S in the casino [3% fee]

Or onboard ATM [$5 or $6 transaction fee. So if you wanted $500 or $1000, the ATM is cheaper than the S&S 3%]

Dan, I like your idea of winning it in the casino best. Just in case that doesn't work, I need a plan B. I would like to just cash checks at the Purser's desk but am I limited to just one check for the whole week? I would like to skip the travelers checks if I can. Thanks for everyone's input.

You are limited to one check and also the amount of the check. If you use an American Express credit card they allow a slightly higher amount.

I have looked at this same situation. Wondering if there are any limits on cashing travelers checks? I will bring a "wad" of cash as mentioned but the wife and I go on vacation to gamble and carrying a few grand in cash is not my idea of a good gamble. Will they cash as many travelers checks as you want in the casino? They are the safest way to go!

No limits on travelers checks. on both Royal and carnival its one check and it think the limit is for 250.00

I agree take some cash but get the travelers checks. If you have AAA you can get them free.
