Panama Canal Lane closure

If this link works for you I'm sure you can find out more than you ever thought you wanted to know about a lane closure ;) . These closures are normal for necessary maintenance and procedures are put in place to minimize delays to shipping. Passenger ships as well as other ships carrying perishable cargo are given preferential treatment.

One set of locks on the Atlantic side was shut during our cruise in 2001. It was sort of interesting to see all the water drained out of the locks on the other side. There were ships waiting and we had to wait for several hours before we went thru the set of locks that was open. But as was mentioned above some ships got preferential treatment.
