Port of New Orleans-hotels near the pier

We will be sailing out of New Orleans, Feb. 24th to the Western Caribbean. My sister and I are considering going a couple of days early in order to see the French Quarter. Do any of you have recommendations for hotels near the pier that are fairly inexpensive and convenient?

There is another area that gets more traffic for New Orleans than this one. Try Ports of Call > New Orleans http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=21 for more ideas.

 

We stay in one of the Marriott properties (Springhill Suites - not in the French Quarter, although fairly close) for free because of points we have. Depending upon your idea of inexpensive, you may have a hard time finding something close and convenient. I would think you'd have to pay above $125 a night (not exactly my idea of inexpensive :o ).

We are staying at the Holiday Inn Select New Orleans Convention Center for the night proceeding our cruise. They have a special for $129.00 per night plus free parking for the week while we are cruising. Their number is (504) 524-1881. We had to ask for their reservations manager (Mariah) and then ask her for the advertised "Park n Cruise rate" of 129.00. She told us the hotel offers free shuttle service to the pier as well. As I have seen others mention, this is definitely one of the best deals.:D

Look at the Hilton Riverside Hotel. It is close to the cruise ship terminal, Harrah's Casino, and the French Quarter. Very nice hotel and it is right on the river.

 

Will set you back about $200 a night, but this is the going rate for this area of town.

 

There is a Holiday Inn Select and a Hampton Inn right across from the cruise ship terminal. This would also be the hotels listed along Convention Center Blvd. They are about a 1/2 mile from the French Quarter.

Go the the Holiday Inn webpage and do a search for any of their hotels within a 5 mile radius.

 

There is a Holiday Inn Select that will do a $99.00 +$15.00 a night for parking if you call them direct. I just got an email from the manager.

 

We are using free points, so we are staying at the Holiday Inn on Royal. (parking there is $24.00 a night)

 

There is also one on Rue Daphine.

 

All of these are a $10.00 taxi ride to the port, if the hotel does not have a shuttle.

 

I should say these prices were for December. I am certain they are higher during peak tourist season.

We stayed at Hampton Inn Convention Center on 10/14. Cruise special $129 for four in a double on a Sat night. That included dinner for two and breakfast.

 

Parked for the week of the cruise for $49.98 with a free shuttle to the pier. They will not pick you up on your return but it is only a 12 minute walk back to the hotel. It will be even quicker when they get the passageway through the convention center completed.

 

You can walk to Riverwalk, Harrahs, and Bourbon Street.

It looked like they were about to put tile on the floors but I didn't notice anything had been done during the week we were gone. I had to walk around the Convention Center to get back to the Hampton Inn to retrieve our car.

 

The entry will be between Hampton Inn Convention Center and the Holiday Inn Select near the little park between the two. You will probaly have to carry your luggage up and down the stairs.

Thanks for the info. It is poor planning like this that makes you really sit back and say "wwhhhaaattt???" You have to wonder who thought up that original design in the first place to completely encase an entire block knowing there would be folks on one side that needed to get to the other side.

If you're coming earlier than the 20th, keep in mind that Tues is Mardi Gras and all the hotels are booked at least a year in advance.

 

If at all possible, try and make it. You won't see anything like it anywhere on earth.

 

I live in New Orleans and we are leaving on the NCL SUN on the 18th and will be in Costa Maya on Mardi Gras day.

 

Lots of New Orleanians leave town for carnival week, but I'm a parade freak. This will be my first missed one in 48 years. I'll have to bring beads on the trip and have our own parade.

Ya might want to consider what you'll be doing while in New Orleans rather than how close the hotel is to the port. If you plan on spending most of your time in the French Quarter you'd be better off getting a hotel there and a cab to the port. (It's actually close enough to walk, but not if you're carrying a bunch of luggage.)

 

As someone else pointed out Mardi Gras is the 20th - so you may want to plan on coming after that. Of course you may want to come for Mardi Gras - in which case you'd better make your reservations now and be prepared to pay a lot - but it's a good party!!

 

As far as choosing a hotel any of them in the French Quarter or CBD (Central Business District) would be close enough for a short cab ride. There are several on Convention Center Blvd., which is the closest you can get to the port.

I booked the Holiday Inn Select Convention Center for our upcoming Grandeur cruise. Someone above mentioned a half mile to Bourbon St. Is it a safe area to walk?

We walked it 10/14/06 and had no problems. We walked down Bourbon Street and over to the square and then back to the casino. It was a lot of fun.

New Orleans and the French Quarter are as safe as any big city. That being said you need to be careful. We visit there as often as possible and hold nothing back and go anywhere, anytime. The scum are there, though, as in any large city. You just have to be careful.

We stayed at Embassy Suites which is 2 blocks from the terminal and the mall. It was great, we just walked to the port with our luggage. We also walked to the French Quarter which was about 4 or 5 blocks.

I called the Holiday Inn Select Convention Center and asked about the "park-n-cruise" rate of $129.00 for that week and was told it was not available. Someone on another thread mentioned they had booked a 4 star mystery hotel located in the french quarter for $109 thru bookit.com. Does anyone know what hotel it might be?? It's on Canal St. I know they would like to be close to the french quarter, but they would be willing to walk to it if need be.

Any info is appreciated!

Guess it would be hard to say for certain, but I believe the Sheraton is on Canal St. I can't guarantee this tho.

I found out today the 4 star mystery hotel that is advertised on bookit.com is the Astor Crowne Plaza New Orleans. If anyone is interested it costs $109 in March.:)
